The Seductive Detail Effect and Why It Matters for College Textbook Reading
In this article, we discuss the seductive detail effect and its potentially harmful presence in learning materials like college textbooks. Our goal is to consider how seductive details can be detrimental to learning from text, particularly for those readers who struggle the most with college‐level texts, and how to mitigate those negative effects. Seductive details are interesting, but irrelevant, portions of text that are only tangentially relat…
Using college readers' eye movements to discuss textbook reading strategies
In order to better understand whether and how college students use certain textbook reading strategies, this project employed several important methods in concert, including a textbook reading strategy inventory that focused on frequency of strategy use, eye‐movement recordings of participants reading college textbook excerpts, and think‐aloud sessions in which participants viewed their own eye‐movement recordings and used them as a stimulus to e…
Mountains and Pit Bulls
In this article, we describe an approach to uncovering learners' literacy‐oriented conceptualizations while they are enrolled in transitional, or developmental, reading and writing classes in a college context. This approach entailed eliciting and then analyzing the metaphors for academic literacies produced by students in 15 sections of a mandatory paired reading and writing course. We examine major themes that emerged from our analysis en route…
The Subjectivity Problem
Metaphor analysis procedures for uncovering participant conceptualizations have been well-established in qualitative research settings since the early 1980s; however, one common criticism of metaphor analysis is the trustworthiness of the findings. Namely, accurate determination of the conceptual metaphors held by participants based on the investigation of linguistic metaphors has been identified as a methodological issue because of the subjectiv…
Peer Review Re-Viewed
While peer review is a common practice in college composition courses, there is little consistency in approach and effectiveness within the field, owing in part to the dearth of empirical research that investigates peer-review processes. This study is designed to shed light on what a peer reviewer actually reads and attends to while providing peer-review feedback
Viewing eye movements during reading through the lens of chaos theory
This theoretical article examines reading processes using chaos theory as an analogy. Three principles of chaos theory are identified and discussed, then related to reading processes as revealed through eye movement research. Used as an analogy, the chaos theory principle of sensitive dependence contributes to understanding the difficulty in predicting the nature of a reader's eye movement regressions, the principle of self-similarity is realized…
