Factors of the vowel duration variability in Kazym Khanty
The Khanty language, and specifically the Kazym dialect, is remarkable in terms of its phonetic typology, which contrasts short, long, and reduced vowels through both timbral and quantitative features. While duration variability has been addressed in traditional studies, the interaction between timbre and duration, as well as the influence of syllabic factors, requires further investigation. This study employs corpus phonetic methods to analyze n…
Nasalized vowels in the Altai language based on nasography and spectrography
The paper presents the examination of the vowel nasalization in the Altai language. The study involved an experiment on nasography. A native speaker of the Altai language recited a program comprising 180 lexemes in an isolated context, repeating it three times. The speech was captured by the icSpeech dualmicrophone system that allows sound from the mouth and nose to be recorded separately. The recordings were annotated using the Praat software an…
Consonants voicing in Surgut Khanty based on electroglottography data
This paper presents an experimental phonetic study of consonant voicing in Surgut Khanty conducted with one na-tive speaker of the Trom-Agan sub-dialect using a Rose Medical EGG-D200 laryngograph and icSpeech software. The vocal cord activity was assessed non-invasively with sensors on the speaker’s throat. The recordings were seg-mented and annotated via Praat software and then statistically processed with the Emu-SDMS corpus manager and R progr…
Surgut Khanty vowel system based on electromagnetic articulography data
The paper deals with the quality features of Surgut Khanty vowels obtained by an electromagnetic articulography experiment with one native speaker of the dialect. During the experiment, coordinates of the sensors placed on the speaker’s tongue and lips were tracked with an electromagnetic field. In total, approximately 350 isolated phonetic words were recorded. The coordinates of the tongue sensor placed on the dorsum and the interlabial distance…
Shapes of the coronal section of the tongue of the consonant phonemes in Surgut Khanty according to electromagnetic articulography data
This paper describes he Surgu Khan y consonan s’ ongue ar icula ions following he electromagnetic articulography method provided by Carstens AG500. An articulography method includes special sensors a ached o speaker’s ar iculators with surgical glue. An electromagnetic field is used for real-time measurement of sensor coordinates. The experiment aimed to obtain the data on Surgut Khanty articulation, not described with instrumental techniques bef…
Typological Characteristics of the Khanty Vocalism Based on Data of Kazym and Surgut Dialects
The paper aims to compare and describe the system of the vowel phonemes in two Khanty dialects - Kazym dialect (the West-Khanty dialectal group) and Surgut dialect (the East-Khanty dialectal group) from the typological point. The statement is made that experimental phonetical data are necessary for typological generalizations in phonology. For the Surgut dialect, for which only subjective auditory descriptions have existed until recent times, exp…
