It’s Hard. It’s Messy. It’s Fun. It’s Necessary. Navigating the Tensions when Co-Researching With Youth Participants
This paper offers a critical reflection of one intergenerational team’s journey to collaborate on a longitudinal study of youth pathways where six participants in the study worked as co-researchers alongside established researchers. By engaging in a careful consideration of our co-research process over the course of multiple years, we articulate our individual and collective experiences of trying, and sometimes failing, to engage in an anti-adult…
Decoding agent-based models supports students’ mechanistic and causal reasoning about scientific phenomena
A common rationale for integrating computational thinking (CT) in science curricula has been the opportunity to increase learning outcomes in both CT and science. While evidence shows that learning to code to create computer models of scientific phenomena improves students’ CT, few studies have demonstrated equivalent increases in science learning. This study aims to investigate the impact of a CT integration curriculum featuring “decoding”, or e…
Expanding the realm of possibilities
A significant challenge is to identify strategies that motivate youth to consider a STEM career pathway. For many young people, the first barrier to entry is lack of awareness of STEM majors and careers. Promisingly, informal STEM programs are potential vehicles for addressing issues of underrepresentation and for bolstering youths’ knowledge and understanding of STEM career pathways. The goal of this study was to conduct a meta-synthesis of rese…
Talking to Strangers About Science
Dioramas are an iconic part of natural history museums that present complex scientific content in a naturalistic scenic setting. Museums have struggled with how best to help visitors view and engage in learning at these exhibits. Recognizing the importance of human facilitation around these exhibits, we conducted a study to explore conversational interactions between families and facilitators designed to support learning. This study included 27 f…

Finding peers “like me”
This mixed-methods study examined the role of belonging and flourishing in the college experiences of undergraduate students from communities historically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors. Qualitative findings show that students engaged in strategies to find and develop peer relationships to facilitate their sense of belonging in their STEM major/discipline. Findings from a larger quantitative da…
The role of flourishing in the STEM trajectories of emerging adults
We focus on the use of flourishing as a new measure in studies of pathways in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematical) fields. While the concept of flourishing is promising, the concept may need careful interrogation to ensure it takes structural and personal (cultural, religious, socioeconomic, and racial) differences into account. Our longitudinal study explores emerging adult’s educational and career pathways with careful atte…
Pipeline Schmipeline
Increasing diversity in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and STEM-related degrees and professions is a national priority. Research on students’ pathways in STEM may contribute to our understanding of how to change institutions to achieve diversity; however, until recently, the dominant narrative invoked a “pipeline” metaphor. In this work, we challenge the pipeline metaphor by interrogating what is meant by a “STEM” pathway, meas…
Prevalence, associated risk factors; and patient and economic impact of multiple sensory impairment in a multi-ethnic elderly population in Singapore
MSI is a highly prevalent medical condition, with 1 in 5; and almost 1 in 10 community-dwelling older Asians having any and bilateral MSI, respectively, with a higher likelihood in men, smokers, and those with low SES. Critically, MSI has a substantial negative impact on patient health and economic outcomes across the laterality spectrum. Sensory testing is critical to detect and refer individuals with MSI for management to improve their function…
Methods for Co-researching With Youth
This article provides a cross-case study of three studies that utilized anti-adultist approaches to collaborating with youth as co-researchers. Drawing on reflections from both adults and youth, we present an analysis of three case studies of adult and youth experiences in planning, implementing, and conducting research studies aimed at centering youth perspectives. Findings include what adults and youth learned about the co-researching process a…
What we've learned
We have been learning about the learning of children and youth, teachers, and visitors over the course of 7 years as we developed and deepened a research agenda in education in our natural history museum. In 2016 in this journal, we detailed how we began this effort and the development and initial steps of an educational research agenda. Focusing on our work since then, our team of educational researchers describes how our research has revealed t…
Psychological effects of music on mental health
Music is a great psychotherapy which gives relief from stress. It develops the mind and boosts self-confidence. Music plays a more important role in our life as it has positive effect on our mental health. Here In this research, changing mood from negative to positive by using Psychology term Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) mood scale is implemented. PANAS questionnaire is used to take survey to create songs database. Test-retest re…
Environmental Impact of Musical Sounds
Human beings have been interested in the environment around them since the beginning of history. Man learned to use fire and other instruments to change the environment. The things around an organism which affect its life activities, form the environment. In reality, the organism and the environment are dependent on each other. It is impossible to imagine the existence of one separate from the other. The existence of all living beings depends on …
Partnerships to offer advanced learning for all students
Out-of-school programs can offer personalized and meaningful learning experiences that deepen students’ knowledge and cater to their passions and interests, but it has been a painful reality that many such programs have been available only to students and families with privilege and resources. Karen Hammerness, Anna MacPherson, Preeti Gupta, Tramia Jackson, and Rachel Chaffee describe how the Science Research Mentoring Consortium in New York City…
Cluster
The purpose of this paper is to describe and present results from the fourth year of a five-year collaborative research project between an interactive science center and a local college. The purpose of the project is not only to recruit and train approximately 50 highly qualified science teachers who will teach in New York City public schools, but also to develop a model for science teacher preparation. This model demonstrates how university-scie…
