Post-graduate Teachers’ STEM Education Experiences and the Development of their 21st Century Skills
Developing strong 21st century skills is crucial for teachers, and exploring how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education experiences can contribute to this development in teacher education holds significant value. The purpose of this research was to explore how STEM education experiences foster the development of 21st century skills in post-graduate teachers within the context of the Global South. Methodologically, it f…
Collaboratively Stepping Back as a Method in an Arts-Inspired Self-Study to Move Forward in Professional Learning for Social Change
We are a team of two South African teacher educator researchers at a higher education institution in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Each of us has distinct research niches, and stem from different racial and cultural backgrounds. Our common interest in and commitment to social change through education led to this collaboration where we explored ways of extending the learning we had acquired whilst completing our doctoral research projects. In our…
STEM education in the Global North and Global South
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is increasingly viewed as a vehicle for global dominance and a panacea to economic downturns, environmental challenges, and food security. However, divergences in STEM education agendas at regional and national levels imply disparities in policy formulation and implementation in the Global North and Global South. This study sought to explore what informs the drivers of STEM educat…
Re-centring and recovering knowledge about climate-friendly agriculture
Patriarchal capitalist colonisation has bestowed on the world civilisational crises, including climate change and the spread of virulent pandemics. The agri-food model, which has been moulded by the contours of the modern capitalist enterprise, is a key source of chemical pollution from artificial fertilisers, and air pollution from greenhouse gases. The consequent killing of soil and water biomes, and the warming of the planet from these polluta…
Grabbing the Sharp End of the Knife to Bring Liberation, Peace and Justice to South Africans
The tableware sparkles, the fresh flower arrangements are fragrant, soft, live jazz music tones permeate the air as the luncheon, which is of a world-class standard, gets underway. I am attending the celebration to mark the opening of new teaching venues at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, named after political stalwarts Ellen Kuzwayo and Phyllis Naidoo. Tributes are paid to these prototypical giantesses, who had worked as teachers during a part …
The what, who and where of female students’ fear of sexual assault on a South African University campus
Sexual assault is a serious and urgent concern at university campuses. The fear of sexual assault is widespread and expressed almost exclusively by women. This briefing explores female students’ fears about sexual violence and the spaces within which they feel vulnerable while at university, with a view to planning effective interventions to address their fears. This was done by working with them towards understanding the nature and extent of sex…
The power of love
The degradation of African sexuality, through the construction of African bodies as objects of symbolic and substantial violence and crime, and African people as sexually permissive and sexually immoral, has been a persistent feature of numerous scholarly works. The era of HIV and AIDS has strengthened the bleak African sexuality discourse, by underscoring the danger of sex in Africa. This Article seeks to de-legitimise the subjugation of African…
Dangerous alliance
This paper reflects on three women's experiences of intimate partner violence, which was enacted by their husbands within the institution of marriage. It does this by drawing on theoretical resources from feminism and theories of violence to inform the understanding of the social causation of husband-on-wife violence. Through narrative methodology, ways in which the “fault-line” of gender socialisation contribute to married women's vulnerability …
Young HIV and Aids researchers—calling the gender shots through photovoice
A major challenge that confronts South Africa is the increasing percentage of its population, especially young women, being infected with HIV daily. This article looks at how young researchers develop an understanding of the influence of gender and the spread of HIV through critical and reflexive engagement with the data that they have gathered. The article is based on a study that used the principles of feminist theory to focus on gender roles a…
