Access to healthcare amongst adolescent girls and young women in Ugandan artisanal and small-scale mining communities
BACKGROUND: Artisanal small scale-mining (ASM) provides work to many adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Uganda. AGYW working in ASM face a unique set of health challenges such as exposure to mercury, HIV and sexually transmitted infections. AGYW in ASM are more vulnerable since they work and live in remote areas with limited health infrastructure which may limit their access to care. However, the AGYW's access to care, including SRH care,…
A risky coping strategy
Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) attracts some of the most vulnerable populations, including females who constitute close to half of the labor force. Among this group are adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) who, driven by poverty, engage in risky sexual behaviors that are detrimental to their health. The situation was dire during the COVID-19 lockdown. This paper examines the determinants of multiple sexual partnerships (MSPs) (operatio…
Determinants of sexually transmitted infections among adolescent girls and young women in artisanal and small-scale mining communities of Uganda
The results highlight the urgent need to respond to the high prevalence of self reported STIs among AGYW in ASM. The risk factors constitute multiple and intersecting vulnerabilities that require both preventive and curative interventions targeting female and male ASM workers and host communities, with emphasis on behavioral change and promotion of viable alternative sources of income. The ministries of Health, Gender, Labour and Social Developme…
Evidence-Based Participatory Research Approaches for Last Mile Adolescent Girls and Young Women
There is increased interest in methods to achieve meaningful inclusion of traditionally marginalized and last mile populations in research. Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) working in the artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) are an extremely marginalized group who, in addition to being excluded from decision making processes, tend to be excluded from research- even when the research is about them. There is a paucity of literature on the meth…
Stakeholder Perspectives of Experiential Education in Tertiary Institutions and Learning From Covid-19
Background Many universities in Canada offer experiential education (EE) opportunities for students that are both field-based and on-campus. Despite a commitment to EE, there is a paucity of information about various stakeholder perspectives of EE and the equity implications of the different approaches to EE. Furthermore, it is unclear how EE programs at universities changed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions. Purpose T…
Contradictions and possibilities for change
Increasing global inequities have led to ongoing critiques of both the historical roots and current practices in global health. From this literature, questions have emerged about the future of global health and Canada’s role in this future. However, there is little research exploring the role of Canadian policy for global health funding and the experience of stakeholders that currently implement projects with Canadian funding. This study explores…
Exploring economic and health interventions to support adolescents’ resilience and coping in mining communities
Economic resilience interventions for last mile youth include policy advocacy. • Health resilience interventions focus on sexual and reproductive health. • Effective interventions are multi-level, multi-sectoral, and multi-stakeholder. Economic and social disruptions, such as the global COVID-19 pandemic, heighten the vulnerability of adolescents. These disruptions exacerbate health and economic inequities which are further compounded in informal…
Exploring adolescent engagement in sexual and reproductive health research in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda
Adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) in East Africa has prioritized research on the barriers to care, communication, and ASRH knowledge, attitudes, and practices. However, there is little research examining the extent to which meaningful adolescent engagement in research is achieved in practice and how this influences the evidence available to inform ASRH services. This review offers a critical step towards understanding current appro…
