From family estrangement to empowered exits
Adult child and parent estrangement has seen an upward trend in recent years. While former research has explored the motivations and implications of the family estrangement or exiting phenomenon, little is known about the emotional (re)socialization process of "exiters" in the family exiting process. Through in-depth, online interviews ( n = 30), this qualitative study investigates how adult children and parent exiters undergo an emotional (re)so…
Meaning-making and well-being among exiters of religious fundamentalism
The rate of religious disaffiliation has been on the rise in the United States, yet little is known about how religious 'exiters' reconstruct meaning in their lives or about their efforts at meaning-making related to perceived well-being. This study applies a meaning-making framework to investigate an understudied sub-group of exiters—individuals who left Christian fundamentalist religions. The qualitative research draws on 24 semi-structured int…
Reconceptualising emotional capital and intimacy using a sociological lens

We begin by describing how ITI uses pragmatism as a theoretical basis for linking beliefs, in the form of preconceptions, to actions, in the form of data collection and analysis. Next, we present the four basic phases that ITI relies on: assessing belie…
Exiters of religious fundamentalism
Over the past decade, researchers have documented the steady growth of religious “exiters” – those who drop their affiliation with any organised religion. Religious disaffiliation or “exiting” may affect health, and while most studies of religion and health are quantitative and emphasise the health benefits of religious involvement, little qualitative research has been devoted to documenting the lived experience of religious exiting. This qualita…
