This article examines the role of behavioural determinants on an individual’s level of cultural participation across a range of cultural activities. Using behavioural insights to incorporate psychometric tools within a survey administered to a sample of the Australian population, the resulting dataset is analysed using ordered logit regression to uncover evidence on the role of curiosity, personality and values on cultural participation activitie…
I’m Being told on Sunday Mornings that There’s Nothing Wrong with Me”
Research has suggested that some leisure spaces can be unwelcoming for those who are lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) while other leisure spaces can provide an important oasis for LGB individuals to escape homophobia and heterosexism. Leisure research, however, has yet to explore religious spaces as a context for leisure among LGB people. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of a group of lesbians who attended an LGBTQ-oriented…
From the Costa Del Sol to Vietnam
In this research note, I discuss culture, taken as a cognitive construct derived from Goodenough's (1967b) definition, as a cornerstone concept in tourism studies. Reflecting on my experience as a hospitality practitioner and as a tourism scholar, I marshal autoethnographic evidence to support the view that ethnographic inquiry is perhaps the most useful tool at the disposal of tourism scholars to make significant forays into the study of tourism…
Boxing Culture and Serious Leisure among North-American youth
In this paper, I discuss how I followed in the footsteps of Loïc Wacquant (2004) and took a closer and personal look at boxing as a leisure activity, from the point of view of those who participate in it, using embodied ethnography as the means of research. I was curious as to how and/or if leisure theory relates and applies to boxing, given the latter’s peculiar characteristics, which seem to equate it more with “work” than with “leisure.” I sou…
New architecture on indigenous lands
This volume is a welcome addition to the growing body of literature devoted to the importance of the arts as a means of cultural expression and revitalization for indigenous peoples (Linds et al
The lamprey and the partridge
This article discusses the impacts food tourism has had on traditional foodstuffs and foodways in two separate regions in Central Portugal. Following a multi-sited ethnographic approach, ethnographic and documental data from the regions of Baixo Mondego and Beira Interior Sul pertaining to tourism impacts on local foodstuffs and foodways were collected and analyzed over the course of several years (2003–2012). Dishes representative of the culinar…

It wasn't my sole purpose for going down there’ — An inquiry into the Spring Break experience and its relation to risky behaviors and alcohol consumption
In an effort to further existing knowledge of the Spring Break phenomenon and its connection to risky behaviors and alcohol consumption, 14 undergraduate students from a large Mid‐Atlantic North American University, going on their first Spring Break experience, were interviewed before and after Spring Break. Adopting a qualitative framework, interviews were transcribed verbatim and subsequently coded and analysed until a clear picture of the part…
