  • Examining the role of anticipated enjoyment and intention in predicting attendance in exercise classes

Open Access•Katharina Feil, Julian Fritsch et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2025

A large body of research shows that positive affect is related to higher physical activity levels. Building on this relation, a more novel approach suggests that also the anticipation of affective responses or more specific anticipated emotions may play a role for physical activity participation. Focusing on a specific emotion, the purpose of this study was to examine the relation between anticipated enjoyment, intention and exercise class attend…

  • Trait emotional intelligence in competitive sports

    Open Access•Alexandra Kopp, Darko Jekauc•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2025

Emotional intelligence (EI) is a determinant of athletic performance. Since each sport has its own psychological requirements, individual EI dimensions could have different relevance for athletic performance. This study investigated EI variations among athletes participating in 48 different sports, considering the specific emotional challenges faced by athletes in competitive sports using the appraisal theory of emotions. A total of 605 athletes …

  • Association between physical activity and physical health in German children and adolescents - results from the MoMo Longitudinal Study

Open Access•Simon Kolb, Alexander Burchartz et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Participating in sports regularly from adolescence to early adulthood is associated with the strongest health benefits. Nevertheless, those who were less active initially but increased their sports activity had similar health outcomes, highlighting the importance of sports activity as part of a healthy lifestyle in young adulthood

  • Socio-structural determinants of physical activity behavior in children and adolescents

Open Access•Laura Wolbring, Darko Jekauc et al.•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 63

The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of socio-structural determinants of physical activity (PA) behavior in children and adolescents. We expected that socioeconomic status, social support, and physical environment influence PA directly while socioeconomic status also has an indirect influence via social support and physical environment. Cross-sectional data from the German Motorik-Modul study (MoMo) were used (Wave 2, 2014-2017).…

  • Impact of digital and conventional rehabilitation aftercare on physical and mental health in orthopedic patients in Germany

Open Access•Detlef Schmidt, Julian Fritsch et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

The integration of digital interventions in health rehabilitation offers promising opportunities to improve patient outcomes. However, empirical studies comparing the effectiveness of digital and traditional rehabilitation interventions remain scarce. This study was designed to evaluate the impact of a digital aftercare program, compared to traditional aftercare and a control group, on both psychological and physical health outcomes in individual…

  • The contribution and interplay of implicit and explicit processes on physical activity behavior

Open Access•Darko Jekauc, Ceren Gürdere et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The adoption and maintenance of physical activity (PA) is an important health behavior. This paper presents the first comprehensive empirical test of the Physical Activity Adoption and Maintenance (PAAM) model, which proposes that a combination of explicit (e.g., intention) and implicit (e.g., habit,, affect) self-regulatory processes is involved in PA adoption and maintenance. Data were collected via online questionnaires in English, German, and…

  • A tool to assess fitness among adults in public health studies – Predictive validity of the FFB-Mot questionnaire

Open Access•Alexander Woll, Laura Cleven et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our results suggest that the FFB-Mot to assess fitness in adults has predictive validity for health-related outcomes as indicated by significant correlations, albeit some effect sizes are small. The FFB-Mot may be used as one-time assessment of self-reported fitness, or for repeated testing to assess change of self-reported fitness over time and in different settings (e.g., public health research)

  • A Study on the Psychometric Properties of the Short Version of the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale in an Adult Population

Open Access•Julian Fritsch, Susanne Weyland et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

A new measure of the short form of the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES-S), including four items, has been developed that focuses on the subjective experience of enjoyment. As validation has so far only been conducted in a youth population, the purpose of the present article was to test the psychometric properties of the measure in an adult population in three studies. In the first study ( n = 1017) the results supported the unidimensiona…

  • Examination of Construct Validity and Criterion-Related Validity of the German Motor Test in Egyptian Schoolchildren

Open Access•Osama Abdelkarim, Julian Fritsch et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Physical fitness is an indicator for children's public health status. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the construct validity and the criterion-related validity of the German motor test (GMT) in Egyptian schoolchildren. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 931 children aged 6 to 11 years (age: 9.1 ± 1.7 years) with 484 (52%) males and 447 (48%) females in grades one to five in Assiut city. The children's physical f…

  • A Short Version of the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale

Open Access•Cheng Chen, Susanne Weyland et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The results indicate that PACES-S is a reliable and valid instrument that may be particularly useful to measure physical activity enjoyment in large-scale studies. It shows comparable measurement properties as the long version of PACES

  • Physical activity behaviours of persons living with HIV of low socioeconomic status

    S Z Mabweazara, Lloyd Leach et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2019

Physical activity (PA) is healthy for People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA). This study examined the PA profile of 978 PLWHA based on PA domains and PA intensity. The study also sought to determine whether employment status and level of education can predict PA among PLWHA of low SES. PA and sociodemographic data of 978 PLWHA of mean age 35 (8.77) years were collected using the global physical activity questionnaire and a sociodemographic quest…

  • Prevalence of Underweight and Overweight and Its Association with Physical Fitness in Egyptian Schoolchildren

Open Access•Osama Abdelkarim, Achraf Ammar et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Underweight and overweight are serious health concerns for many children and could be associated with low physical-fitness levels. This study aimed (i) to evaluate the prevalence of underweight and overweight and (ii) to examine its association with the physical fitness levels in primary male and female schoolchildren. Including 13 government primary-schools, a cross-sectional survey was conducted between 2014 and 2017. Anthropometric characteris…

  • Tracking physical activity in different settings from late childhood to early adulthood in Germany

Open Access•Annette Rauner, Darko Jekauc et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

After publication of the article [1], it has been brought to our attention that the values cited under "indices t1-t0" have been reversed and should be displayed in the opposite order. The corrected Table 1 would appear as follows

  • Long-term health benefits of physical activity – a systematic review of longitudinal studies

Open Access•Miriam Reiner, Christina Niermann et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

  • Validity and reliability of a self-report instrument to assess social support and physical environmental correlates of physical activity in adolescents

Open Access•Anne K Reimers, Darko Jekauc et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

The results of this study indicate moderate to good reliability and construct validity of the social support scale and physical environment scale. Predictive validity was only confirmed for the social support scale but not for the physical environment scale. Hence, it remains unclear if a person's physical environment has a direct or an indirect effect on physical activity behavior or a moderation function

  • Prevalence and socio-demographic correlates of the compliance with the physical activity guidelines in children and adolescents in Germany

Open Access•Darko Jekauc, Anne K Reimers et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Programs and policy action addressing the problem of decreasing compliance with PA guideline with increasing age are warranted. The transition from primary school to secondary school seems to be a critical stage in life with respect to PA behaviour. Therefore, specific interventions should aim at restructuring and reorganising their daily and physical activities during this transition
