  • Transmission of values or access to resources? Effects of social class, capitals, and networks on civic engagement

    Open Access•Michał Cebula•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This paper expands our knowledge on class divides in civic participation by asking a question to what extent class effect may be accounted for by differences in capitals (economic and cultural) and personal social networks. Two pathways of networks operation are considered: one related to the structure of network (size and diversity) and the other referring to the type of people someone is connected to (network content). Using Poland as a case, I…

  • The Structure of Social Capital and Cultural Participation: A Cross-sectional Study

    Open Access•Michał Cebula•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 48

This article examines the relationship between cultural participation patterns and access to social resources, proxied by the position generator tool. In addition, it asks to what extent social networks are class-homogeneous (closed) depending on the configuration of cultural practices. The survey results show that participation in highbrow culture is a more relevant predictor of access to higher prestige contacts than participation in popular cu…

  • Kolejny przypadek dystynkcji? Oglądanie telewizji a przestrzeń społeczna w Polsce

Zastosowano wielowymiarową analizę korespondencji do danych sondażowych zebranych na lokalnej próbie w Polsce w 2017 roku, aby zrekonstruować przestrzeń preferencji telewizyjnych i zbadać, jakie czynniki społeczno-demograficzne i klasowe leżą u jej podstaw. Zidentyfikowano dwie główn…

  • Social class, social networks and variety of weak and strong practices

    Open Access•Michał Cebula•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2023•References: 22

Most research on the structural foundations of cultural consumption views tastes and practices as a better or worse emanation of social class or status. In contrast, this paper shows that cultural consumption is also embedded in a larger system of social networks. Not only does it examine whether having more diversified personal network translates into being involved in a wider range of cultural activities (omnivorousness), it also tests whether …

  • Cultural Resources and Mobilization of Social Capital: The Case of Finding a Job

    Open Access•Michał Cebula•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 50

By combining the latest knowledge from cultural sociology and social network theories, a hypothesis is posed regarding the association between cultural consumption and social capital mobilization. On the classic example of looking for work, an assumption was made that persons who prefer or engage in a larger number of cultural forms (the so-called omnivores) have greater chances to find work through social contacts than through any other methods …

  • Podziały klasowe a kapitał społeczny i segregacja sieci

    Open Access•Michał Cebula•ARTICLE•Studia Socjologiczne•2022

  • Inequality in social capital: Assessing the importance of structural factors and cultural consumption for social advantage. A case from Poland

    Michał Cebula•ARTICLE•International Review of Sociology•2022•References: 63

While the benefits of social capital are well recognized in sociology, less is known about its distribution in a society. The present study therefore examines individual differences in access to resourceful networks, adding new insight into underlying mechanism of social capital accumulation. Building on the recent development in cultural sociology and social network theories, it is hypothesized that people who consume more diverse cultural items…

  • Społeczne zróżnicowanie gustu muzycznego

    Open Access•Michał Cebula, Szymon Pilch•ARTICLE•Studia Socjologiczne•2020

Pomiędzy dyspozycją estetyczną a pluralizmem nastawień

    Open Access•Michał Cebula•ARTICLE•Studia Socjologiczne•2018
