Does Religiousness Increase with Age? Age Changes and Generational Differences Over 35 Years
We examine aging patterns and generational trends in religion using 35 years of survey data from 420 four-generation families and in-depth interviews with a subset of 25 families. Results indicate the importance of three time-related effects on religiosity: individual aging and religious development over the life course; cohort influences; and effects of historical trends in religion. Results indicate an overall aging effect with an upward drift …
Families and Faith: How Religion is Passed Down across Generations
Few things are more likely to cause heartache for devout parents than seeing their child leave the faith. And it seems, from media portrayals, that this is happening more and more frequently. For almost four decades, Vern Bengtson and his colleagues have been condu…
The Increasing Use of Theory in Social Gerontology: 1990-2004
OBJECTIVES: To determine how often theory is used in published research in social gerontology, compare theory use over a 10-year period (1990-1994 to 2000-2004), and identify the theories most frequently used in social gerontology research. METHODS: Systematic review of articles published in eight leading journals from 2000 to 2004 (N = 1,046) and comparison with a review conducted 10 years earlier. RESULTS: Theory was mentioned in 39% of article…
A Longitudinal Study of the Intergenerational Transmission of Religion
The longitudinal study of religious transmission or influence across generations is an important but underexamined area of research, particularly in terms of the religious influence of grandparents. How much influence do grandparents have on grandchildren's religious beliefs and practices, and has this changed over the past 30 years? As grandparents have become increasingly important in multigenerational families, do they exert an influence on th…
Family relations in changing times: A longitudinal study of five cohorts of women
A major aim of contemporary research on multigenerational families is to investigate changes in intergenerational dynamics within the context of changing historical times. We highlight ways in which recent historical trends such as population aging, changing patterns of family formation and dissolution, changing life cycle boundaries and women’s increased laborforce participation have altered family structures, functions, and role expectations, e…
