    Michael Tsang•ARTICLE•Transtext(e)s Transcultures 跨文本跨文化•2023

This article aims to offer a diasporic reading of Dung Kai-cheung’s 2021 novel, Hong Kong Type 香港字 (Hoeng1 Gong2 Zi6). Although set in post-2019 Hong Kong, the novel offers constructive ways for Hongkongers living abroad to think about the relationship between their diasporic locality and Hong Kong culture. The novel features a female protagonist recovering from her mental health issues (triggered, as insinuated in the novel, by the protests) thr…

  • Politics in/of transmediality in Murakami Haruki’s bakery attack stories

    Gitte Marianne Hansen, Michael Tsang•ARTICLE•Japan Forum•2020•References: 2

As one of contemporary Japan’s most famous authors, Murakami Haruki’s stories have inspired many producers of various media and genres. In this transmedial process where creative content is transposed between textual and other media forms, the content of a literary work inevitably has to change to suit the new aesthetic form due to the specific conventions of the target media and genre. This article uses Murakami’s works to address such concept o…

Few will deny that Murakami Haruki, the author of works such as Nejimakidori kuronikuru (Murakami 1994–95, trans. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) and 1Q84 (Murakami 2009–10, trans. 1Q84), is Japan’s mo
