Projecting ocean acidification impacts for the Gulf of Maine to 2050
Ocean acidification (OA) is increasing predictably in the global ocean as rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide lead to higher oceanic concentrations of inorganic carbon. The Gulf of Maine (GOM) is a seasonally varying region of confluence for many processes that further affect the carbonate system including freshwater influences and high productivity, particularly near the coast where local processes impart a strong influence. Two main reg…
A Comparison of Methods Used for the Calibration of Radiocarbon Dates
Current calibration methods for single and replicate 14 C dates are compared. Various forms of tabular and graphic output are discussed. Results from all the methods show reasonable agreement but further methodological development and improvements in computer output are required. Comparison of existing techniques for a series of non-contemporaneous dates showed less agreement amongst participants on this issue. We recommend that calibrated dates …
Calibration of Radiocarbon Ages by Computer
A PC-based computer program for automatic calibration of 14 C dates has been developed in Turbo-Pascal (version 4.0). It transforms the Gaussian 14 C dating result on the 3σ level into a real calendar age distribution. It uses as a calibration curve a spline function, generated along the calibration data points as published in the Radiocarbon Calibration Issue. Special versions of the code can average several 14 C dates into one calibrated result…
The Need for a Calibrated Radiocarbon Chronology of Near Eastern Archaeology
Progress in radiocarbon dating and calibration accuracy should lead to the development of a calibrated radiocarbon chronology of Near Eastern archaeology, particulary for historical times. The lack of such an independent and impartial chronology is a major constraint, not only in archaeological studies, but also for interdisciplinary research involving the history of man, landscape and climate in the Near East and adjacent regions
A Letter to the Radiocarbon Community
Dear Colleague, You will probably recall the discussion we had during the business meeting in Dubrovnik about our radiocarbon community forming some kind of, more or less, formal association. It was my personal impression that this subject could not adequately be discussed with such a large group at such short notice. The idea (which is not mine) was not sufficiently dissipated before the business meeting, for which I apologize
Groningen 14 C Data Base
Since May 1952 the Isotope Physics Laboratory in Groningen has dated ca 13,000 14 C samples. Due to lack of time the publication of date lists in Radiocarbon ceased in 1971 and probably will not be resumed in the standard way. Most dates have been published but they are scattered over a great variety of books and articles
Stratigraphy, pollen analysis and paleoclimatic interpretation of Mowrray and Rroadmeadows Swamps, North Western Tasmania
Sedimentary, palynologic and 14C analysis of marls and swamp‐peats, formed under fluctuating artesian spring conditions, provide climate and vegetation records from >52,000 to 0 yr BP at Mowbray, and 30,000 to 0 yr BP at Broadmeadows. Before about 65,000 yr BP conditions at Mowbray were relatively dry and the vegetation was Leptospermum shrubland. After 65,000 and before 55,000 yr BP moist conditions produced Cyperaceae swamps. Between 55,000 and…
Stratigraphy, Pollen Analysis, and Paleoclimatic Interpretation of Pulbeena Swamp, Northwestern Tasmania
Sedimentary, palynologic, and 14 C analysis of 480 cm of freshwater marl and swamp-peat deposits, formed under the influence of fluctuating artesian springs, provides a paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic record of approximately 65,000 yr for northwestern Tasmania. The Holocene (Pollen Zone 1, 11,000-0 yr B.P.) climate was warm and moist, and forest vegetation was dominant throughout the area. During the later part of the last glacial stage (Pol…
Finite date of the Jämtland Interstadial
Enrichment dating procedure (GrN‐9394) on a sample from the interstadial site Tåsjö, Ångermanland, Sweden, which is referred to the Jämtland Interstadial, has given the age 54,700±550 B.P. In the northwest European chronology this corresponds to late Odderade.
The Effect of Fossil Fuel and Biogenic CO 2 on the 13 C and 14 C Content of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide
The normalization of a measured δ 14 C value of atmospheric CO 2 to a δ 13 C value of − 25‰ does not take into account the presence of fossil fuel and biogenic CO 2 . In this paper, we try to assess these contaminations as well as the proper 14 C content of “clean air”
Medium-Term Atmospheric 14 C Variations
High-precision 14 C measurements are presented, carried out on single tree rings from a section of the floating South German Neolithic tree-ring chronology. They confirm the existence of pronounced medium-term variations in the order of 2 percent during the 33rd to 38th centuries BC. These variations turn out to be very regular while the precision of 1.5‰ allows a comparison with a geochemical model calculation. Good agreement is acquired for an …
Design, Construction and Calibration of A High Accuracy Carbon-14 Counting Set up
The construction and performance of a proportional CO 2 counter system is described by which an over-all accuracy is obtained of 1.3‰ after a two-day counting period
