Treating the Incumbent Patient in Triage
Allocating scarce intensive care resources requires decisions about both which patients should receive priority and which rules should guide those choices. We investigate how the procedural allocation rule “first come, first served” (FCFS) shapes triage decisions. Using experimental ICU bed allocation scenarios, we examine how 8,227 scientists across disciplines, surveyed in April and May 2020, make life-and-death allocation decisions when patien…
Party discipline, representation, and the condorcet jury theorem
How does district magnitude affect the quality of political representation? The Condorcet Jury Theorem (CJT) predicts that majority decisions improve with group size when members vote independently and are more likely than not to be correct. We test whether this aggregation mechanism applies to political decisions by examining whether larger legislative delegations better reflect constituent preferences. Nominal district magnitude often overstate…
The beauty premium in politics? Perceptions and political behavior
We investigate whether physical attractiveness is associated with the behavior of elected politicians towards their voters, extending prior research that has focused on beauty's effects on electoral success. Leveraging the institutional features of Swiss politics, namely, mandatory disclosure of interest group affiliations and direct democracy allowing the identification of voter preferences, we link independent beauty ratings of Swiss politician…
Too hot to play it cool? Temperature and negative media bias
This paper examines the impact of outdoor temperature on media bias in a quasi-experimental setting. We take advantage of the geographical proximity of the locations of the three major US news networks, ABC News, CBS News, and NBC News, all headquartered in New York City, and granular variations in local daily temperatures. We use more than 10 years of daily hand-coded data on the tonality of evening weekday news broadcasts by each news network t…

Clean Energy Adoption in Developing Countries
Cooking with relatively clean fuel has numerous benefits, including reducing pollution and improving health and socioeconomic outcomes. Hence, some developing countries have implemented policies to promote LPG use. However, risks of accidents and explosions may prevent risk-averse households from adopting LPG. This study examines the causal effect of risk aversion on the adoption and expenditure of LPG using the seventh round of the Ghana Living …
Substantive Representation of Women
We identify women’s revealed preferences for legislative proposals to investigate substantive representation of women. We then examine whether female or male politicians in parliament are more responsive to revealed female preferences using data on 47,527 decisions made by all 777 Swiss parliamentarians between 1996 and 2022. Holding party and constituent preferences constant, our results show differences in the substantive representation of wome…
Income and Terrorism
This paper first introduces a theoretical formalization connecting a polity’s income level to terrorism. Our framework can accommodate different underlying assumptions about individual- and society-level grievances, yielding competing hypotheses. We then construct a panel database to study terrorism for 1527 subnational regions in 75 countries between 1970 and 2014. Results consistently imply an inverted U-shape that remains robust to incorporati…

National identity predicts public health support during a global pandemic
Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during …
Predicting attitudinal and behavioral responses to Covid-19 pandemic using machine learning
At the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 became a global problem. Despite all the efforts to emphasize the relevance of preventive measures, not everyone adhered to them. Thus, learning more about the characteristics determining attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic is crucial to improving future interventions. In this study, we applied machine learning on the multi-national data collected by the International Collaboration on the Social…
Evaluating Water- and Health-related Development Projects
We present a micro-based approach to evaluate the effect of water- and health-related development projects which complements established evaluation methods. We collect information from 1.8 million individuals from DHS clusters (Demographic and Health Surveys) in 38 developing economies between 1986 and 2017. We combine cluster information with over 14,000 sub-national projects from the World Bank. We then investigate the impact of the projects em…
How does globalization affect Covid-19 responses
BACKGROUND: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the vast differences in approaches to the control and containment of coronavirus across the world and has demonstrated the varied success of such approaches in minimizing the transmission of coronavirus. While previous studies have demonstrated high predictive power of incorporating air travel data and governmental policy responses in global disease transmission modelling, factors influenc…

Political competition and legislative shirking in roll-call votes
We analyze the impact of elected competitors from the same constituency on legislative shirking in the German Bundestag from 1953 to 2017. The German electoral system ensures at least one federal legislator per constituency with a varying number of elected competitors between zero to four from the same constituency. We exploit the exogenous variation in elected competitors by investigating changes in competition induced by legislators who leave p…
Certified Coronavirus Immunity as a Resource and Strategy to Cope with Pandemic Costs
A pandemic is not only a biological event and a public health disaster, but it also generates impacts that are worth understanding from economic, societal, historical, and cultural perspectives. In this contribution, we argue that as the disease spreads, we are able to harness a valuable key resource: people who have immunity to coronavirus. This vital resource must be effectively employed , it must be certified , it must be searched for, it must…
Church Voting Recommendations, Voter Preferences, and Political Decisions
In Switzerland, two key church institutions-the Conference of Swiss Bishops and the Federation of Protestant Churches-make public recommendations on how to vote for certain referenda. We leverage this situation to directly measure religious organizations' power to reflect and shape human decision making. That is, using a direct measure of voters' commitment to their religious institution, we analyze whether they are more likely to vote in line wi…
The Effect of Food Price Changes on Child Labour
Most people in developing countries spend up to 60 per cent of their income on food, even though the majority of them are farmers. Hence, a change in food prices affects both their revenue as well as expenditure, and it may thereby affect their labour market decisions. Using the Uganda National Panel Survey and monthly regional food prices, this paper examines the effect of changes in food prices on child labour. The empirical evidence shows that…

The Intimate Link Between Income Levels and Life Expectancy
Objectives What is the main driver of life expectancy across societies and over time? This study aims to document a systematic and quantitatively sizeable relationship between income levels and life expectancy. Method A panel data set of 197 countries over 213 years is analyzed with different regression methods. Robustness tests are provided. Results By itself, GDP per capita explains more than 64 percent of the variation in life expectancy. The …
Testing the Median Voter Model and Moving Beyond its Limits
Objectives This study quantifies the quality of the median voter model (MVM) and analyzes whether personal characteristics explain legislative shirking. Methods We employ a natural measure for divergence between politicians and voter preferences by matching final roll‐call votes of politicians with referendum results. The relevance of personal characteristics for legislative shirking is analyzed by means of logit regressions. Results The MVM outp…
No place like home
We set up an opinion diffusion model with a local opinion leader, and using simulations we show the possibility of driving a significant wedge between the opinions of two groups that exhibit homophily although individuals are highly conformist. There exists an opinion gap between the group to which the opinion leader belongs and the other group. This opinion gap increases according to the relative size of the residence community. We show empirica…
Preference Representation and the Influence of Political Parties in Majoritarian vs. Proportional Systems
Electoral systems determine the role that representatives’ party affiliations play in political representation. According to conventional expectations, party affiliation drives the behavior of representatives when they are elected under a proportional system, while majoritarian systems mute the role of party affiliation by forcing politicians to converge to the median position of their constituency. This study directly tests these predictions wit…

Capitalisation of Fiscal Variables and Land Scarcity
Fiscal packages usually capitalise into house prices. Yet if enough land for construction is available, housing developers could supply new houses and capitalisation may disappear. This paper provides a theoretical model in which income taxes and public services capitalise at lower rates when housing supply elasticity increases. Using an empirical linear interaction model, we estimate the impact of available land for construction on capitalisatio…

Wage Effects of High-Skilled Migration
The international migration of high-skilled workers may trigger productivity effects at the macro level such that the wage rate of skilled workers increases in host countries and decrease in source countries. The authors exploit data on international bilateral migration flows and provide evidence consistent with this theoretical hypothesis. They propose various instrumentation strategies to identify the causal effect of skilled migration on log d…

Full Transparency of Politicians' Actions Does Not Increase the Quality of Political Representation
We identify the impact of transparency in political decision-making on the quality of political representation with a difference-in-difference strategy. The quality of political representation is measured by the observed divergence of parliamentary decisions from revealed voter preferences on identical issues. We show that full transparency of votes of individual politicians does not decrease divergence from voter preferences
