Redefining and reimagining foundational skills: Centering joyful, culturally, and linguistically sustaining instruction in literacy instruction for CLD students
Language and culture hold power and significant connections to students' identities. However, these connections are often minimized, especially for students from diverse racial‐ethnic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds who are neither white nor monolingual speakers of English. In literacy instruction, we often see complete disregard and devaluation for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students' home languages, dialects, and cultures…
Educational aspirations as a markovian process: A panel study of college and non‐college plans during high school
An initial test of the discrete‐time Markov model in the study of educational aspirations throughout high school was carried out. The design of the study permitted testing for sex differences and order effects The results indicate a good fit between the data and the model across several cohorts of students. Order effects were apparent, but sex differences in the transition probabilities were not found. Future change in aspirations appears least l…
Religious Identification, Sex, and Income Expectation: A Panel Study of Catholic and Non-Catholic High School Students
Previous studies of Catholic and Protestant achievement aspirations have provided mixed support for the fusion of white Christians into one homogeneous group. Using three-wave panel data for Catholic and non-Catholic high school students (N=287), homogeneity in levels and changes in levels of relative income expectations were examined. Within each religious group males were hypothesized to have higher expectations, to be more likely to raise expe…
Athletic Involvement, Academic Achievement, and Aspiration
In recent years an accumulating number of research studies have shown that participation in athletics is positively related to academic achievement and aspiration. A consistent finding of this research is that athletes have higher educational aspirations than nonathletes (Krauss, 1964; Rehberg and Schafer, 1968; Schafer and Rehberg, 1970). This finding has been qualified by Spady who found that athletic par ticipation without other extracurricula…
Response Bias in Children's Reports of Parental Status Characteristics
There is increasing evidence of the differential accuracy of children's reports of parental status characteristics (Colfax & Allen, 1967; St. John, 1970; Borus & Nestel, 1971; Kayser & Summers, 1973). These studies point to differential abilities of children to accurately replicate parental reports of their income, education, and occupation. Borus and Nestel (1971) using son's and father's reports of father's education found identical reports mor…
The Adequacy of Student Reports of Parental Ses Characteristics
In this study, the reliability and validity of student reports of parental SES characteristics was investigated. Using panel data for student reports and independent surveys of both mothers and fathers, it was found that student reports were relatively stable over time and were more reliably measured for parental education than for either father's income or occupation. The validities of the reports were, for all but income reports, moderate. The …
