Motivations for Citizen Involvement in a Community Crime Prevention Initiative: Pennsylvania's TIP (Turn in a Poacher) Program
Every fall, nearly 500,000 Steelhead Trout enter northwest Pennsylvania tributary streams attracting both the ethical angler and the poacher. Although there are certainly more ethical anglers on the streams than poachers, the latter cause a great deal of concern not only for conservation officers, but also for landowners, ethical anglers, and the general public. This article examines a specific, grassroots, crime prevention initiative called “Tur…
Women in Parole: Gendered Adaptations of Female Parole Agents in California
More women than ever are present today in correctional occupations. Women have been promoted to higher ranks, in part due to structural changes that have granted women legitimate access to promotion. However, attitudes, training, working environment, and social dynamics remain laden with gender barriers for women in correctional occupations. This article examines gender barriers for women in parole. The study uses semi-structured interviews with …

Criminal justice students' understanding, or misunderstanding, of issues facing elderly persons
This research compares the attitudes of criminal justice students about nine issues of concern to older persons to the attitudes of members of three occupational groups—nursing home administrators, nursing home professionals, and police chiefs. In all, 395 individuals from the four groups were asked to rate and rank the importance of the following issues: health care needs, property crime, violent crime, war on drugs, fraud, transportation needs,…

Since the publication of that article, there has remained a dearth of consideration of these timely areas. criminal Justice and criminology as cognate emerging disciplines have begun to develop s…

Mentoring members of minorities: Sponsorship and “the gift”
This article examines academic mentoring and the need to establish a viable sponsorship program for minority graduate students. Accordingly we consider the nature of mentoring as represented in the literature and examine several of the problems facing minority academics who already have entered the field but have not been accepted as full members of the “academic guild.” Finally, in an effort to contrast mentorship with sponsorship, we propose a …

How Jews Avoid Alcohol Problems
Twenty-five years have passed since the last major study of Jewish drinking patterns. During that time Jews have drifted away from the Orthodox religious affiliations which the earlier studies (Snyder, 1958; 1978) found to be important in maintaining low alcohol problem rates, and yet these rates remain low. Data from a detailed study of Jews in an American community suggest a revised explanation that focuses upon four protective social processes…
