  • Measuring the Indirect Effects of Adverse Employer Behaviour on Worker Productivity: A field Experiment

    Open Access•Matthias Heinz, Sabrina Jeworrek et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 38

We conduct a field experiment to study how worker productivity is affected if employers act adversely towards their co-workers. Our employees work for two shifts in a call centre. In our main treatment, we lay off some workers before the second shift. Compared to two control treatments, we find that the lay-off reduces the productivity of unaffected workers by 12%. We find suggestive evidence that this result is not driven by altered beliefs abou…

  • On Repeated Games with Endogenous Matching Decision

    Heiner Schumacher•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional and…•2015

We study infinitely repeated games that are played by many groups simultaneously and where players have the option to maintain or quit relationships. For two-player stage games any individually rational payoff vector in the relative interior of V* can be sustained as equilibrium payoff if the discount factor δ is sufficiently large. Such a statement is not possible for stage games with more than two players. We translate the refinement of weak re…

  • The Gods Are Watching: An Experimental Study of Religion and Traditional Belief in Burkina Faso

    Open Access•Myriam Hadnes, Heiner Schumacher•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 21

Traditional beliefs play an important role in many Sub-Saharan African village societies. These beliefs imply immediate punishment for any breach of the moral code, and the possibility to influence an individual's life by the use of magic. We analyze the economic impact of traditional beliefs on behavior by conducting an experiment with microentrepreneurs in the environs of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). The salience of traditional beliefs is random…

  • Reciprocity in Economic Games

    Open Access•Julian Culp, Heiner Schumacher•ARTICLE•Analyse & Kritik•2011•References: 6

The evidence of laboratory experiments of behavioral economists shows that individuals behave reciprocally. These data put into question the pure self-interest thesis of human motivation of the homo oeconomicus model and call for alternative models. Focusing on the explanation of reciprocal behavior in Trust Games, this article proposes two directions that economists and other social scientists might want to consider in order to establish a more …
