  • Acculturative Stress and Sociocultural Adaptation of International Students in the United States

Shahid, Russell Bishop et al.•ARTICLE•International Perspectives in…•2025

Research has shown that acculturative stress and social support are important factors for sociocultural adaptation. To assess whether these phenomena extend to international students, the purpose of the current study was to examine the role of acculturative stress and social support on the sociocultural adaptation of international students who are enrolled in higher education institutions in the United States. The current study further examined t…

  • Exploring professional quality of life in the context of language teacher attrition

Open Access•K Chimène Gecewicz, Lowell Hodges et al.•ARTICLE•Foreign Language Annals•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 50

This study investigates the professional quality of life among 124 K‐12 language teachers in the U.S. to explore factors influencing teacher attrition. Participants reported moderate levels of burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction, with secondary traumatic stress levels significantly higher than levels reported by educators in other disciplines. Lower compassion satisfaction and higher burnout correlated with thoughts o…

  • The Medicine Wheel as a public health approach to lifestyle management interventions for indigenous populations in North America

Open Access•Tammy Greer, Jennifer Lemacks et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

This analytic essay intends to elevate Medicine Wheel, or generally “four directions” teachings, to encourage a more comprehensive alignment of lifestyle intervention components with traditional ecological knowledge systems of Indigenous cultures in North America. North American Medicine Wheels provided people with a way to orient themselves both within their traditional belief systems and to the seasonal changes in their areas, improving surviva…

  • Social determinants of health related to stay-at-home order adherence and social distancing attitudes among a diverse Deep South population

Open Access•Jennifer Lemacks, Jennifer L Lemacks et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Various cultural and contextual factors were related to stay-at-home order adherence. Understanding how social values, life stage, socioeconomic, and geographic factors influence stay-at-home order adherence would lead to more effective policy design to improve population adherence

  • Perceived Family Social Support for Healthy Eating Is Related to Healthy Dietary Patterns for Native Americans: A Cross-sectional Examination

Jennifer Lemacks, Jennifer L Lemacks et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2019

Native Americans continue to suffer health disparities ameliorated by healthy dietary patterns. The study objective was to determine moderating effects of perceived family social support on the relationship between ethnicity and diet behaviors. Dependent variables included dietary variables, and independent variable was family social support for healthy eating. Analyses included Pearson χ and correlation, one-way analysis of variance, and regress…

  • We Are a Religious People; We Are a Vengeful People

Open Access•Tammy Greer, Mitchell E Berman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2005•Cited by: 5•References: 29

We evaluate the relation between religiousness and vengeance using multiple indicators of religiousness (religious orientation and church variables) and behavioral as well as self-reports of vengeance. Results from hierarchical regression analyses revealed that intrinsic religious orientation was negatively and extrinsic religious orientation positively related to self-reports of revenge but not to behavioral indicators of revenge. Only quest ori…

  • A Monte Carlo Evaluation of the Tetrachoric Correlation Coefficient

Open Access•Tammy Greer, William P Dunlap et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2003

The tetrachoric correlation coefficient ( r tet), computed from a phi coefficient, approximates what the bivariate normal correlation would have been had the dichotomous variables been analyzed in their continuous form with underlying normal distributions. Although often used by early researchers to adjust phi when marginal distributions had extreme proportions, r tet, more commonly, has been regarded with suspicion. The purpose of these Monte Ca…

  • Canonical Correlation and Chi-Square: Relationships and Interpretation

William P Dunlap, Charles J Brody et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•2000•Cited by: 1

A 2 x 2 chi-square can be computed from a phi coefficient, which is the Pearson correlation between two binomial variables. Similarly, chi-square for larger contingency tables can be computed from canonical correlation coefficients. The authors address the following series of issues involving this relationship: (a) how to represent a contingency table in terms of a correlation matrix involving r - 1 row and c - 1 column dummy predictors; (b) how …

  • A Monte-Carlo Study of Type I Error Rates and Power for Tukey's Pocket Test

William P Dunlap, Tammy Greer et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1996

Tukey's pocket test (1959) is a two-group test of mean differences for which the calculations do not require a calculator or a book of tables. The critical values for the test were derived mathematically by Tukey, and the Type I errors and power of the test when n = 20 and n = 40 for normal and bimodal distributions were studied by Neave and Granger (1968). As an extension of the findings of Neave and Granger, a Monte-Carlo simulation to study Ty…

  • Latent Variables Analysis: Applications for Developmental Research

Charles J Brody, Tammy Greer et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1995

PART ONE: THEORETICAL ISSUES: CONCEPTS IN LATENT VARIABLES ANALYSIS Causal Inference in Latent Variable Models - Michael E Sobel The Theory of Confounding and its Application in Causal Modeling with Latent Variables - Rolf Steyer and Thomas Schmitt The Specification of Equivalent Models before the Collection of Data - Scott L Hershberger PART TWO: ANALYSIS OF LATENT VARIABLES IN DEVELOPMENTAL RESEARCH: CONTINUOUS VARIABLES APPROACHES The Effect o…

  • The Effect of Skew on the Magnitude of Product-Moment Correlations

William P Dunlap, Michael J Burke et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1995•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The effect of transforming actual skewed variables toward symmetry on the intercorrelations among the transformed variables was examined. The results showed that average correlations increased in all 20 cases studied, even though the transformations to correct skew produced slightly greater nonlinear relationships in some cases. Because the F and t tests for the significance of r are directly proportional to the size of r, correcting skew increas…
