‘Magicians responsible for the magic spaces on screen’
In British literature and film the figure recurs, manifesting as a patriarchal male sorcerer, of a guardian of the land. This character appears as Merlin in the work of Malory, Burne-Jones, Kipling and T. H. White, and as variations upon him in three distinctive British films: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s A Canterbury Tale (1944), John Boorman’s Excalibur (1981) and Ben Wheatley’s A Field in England (2013). Eight-year-old Frederick Bailey arrived in Baltimore in March 1826, staying with the Auld family in Fell’s Point. Five years later, he joined the Strawberry Alley black Methodist church, the oldest permanent Methodist place of worship in the …
Combining CMIP data with a regional convection-permitting model and observations to project extreme rainfall under climate change
Due to associated hydrological risks, there is an urgent need to provide plausible quantified changes in future extreme rainfall rates. Convection-permitting (CP) climate simulations represent a major advance in capturing extreme rainfall and its sensitivities to atmospheric changes under global warming. However, they are computationally costly, limiting uncertainty evaluation in ensembles and covered time periods. This is in contrast to the Clim…

Ralph Ellison’s invented life
Jerry Watts's 1994 book Heroism and the Black Intellectual was the first to treat at length throughout the contradictions of Ralph Ellison's cultural and political position. Watts saw Ellison's hesitation to support vigorously the 1960s struggle for racial and social justice in America as a kind of truancy, an abandonment of an earlier principle. In Watts's view, Ellison endorsed a fairly conservative idea called black exceptionalism – the hero's…
