Nostalgia, Social Connectedness, and Acculturation Orientation Among Syrian Refugees
We addressed in a cross-sectional study the role of nostalgia in refugee psychological acculturation orientation toward both home and host cultures, as well as the intervening role of social connectedness. We defined home orientation as efforts to maintain one's original culture and identity, whereas we defined host orientation as efforts to engage with and adopt features of the host culture. We tested 915 Syrian refugees (56.2% women), aged 17 t…
The associations between self‐construal, emotional expressivity and acculturation among Arab immigrants
This contribution investigates differences in self‐construal and emotional expressivity among Arab immigrants and non‐immigrants. Furthermore, it examines the role of acculturation styles and perceived emotional acculturation in predicting these outcomes among Arab immigrants. Using a sample of 1249 self‐identified Arabs (629 immigrants in Western Europe and North America; 620 non‐immigrant Arabs in the Mashriq and Maghrib regions), we found that…
Intergroup conflict and national identity
This study examined the roles of perceived influence of the media, exposure to verbal assault, and desire for self‐reliance on national identity. Using an online self‐reported questionnaire from Qatari college students ( N = 293). Mediation analysis revealed that both perceived media influence and desire for self‐reliance fully mediated the effects of exposure to verbal assault on national identity. The findings support the efficacy of strategies…
The parallelism of cognitive economy and physiological economy
Researchers recognize the affinity of habits-as-heuristics and habits-as-routines. This paper argues that the affinity should not be surprising, as both kinds of habits are the outcome of rational choice. The paper finds that the dual process theory, once reconstructed as based on rational choice, reveals that the affinity runs deep, as three-fold parallelism: i) the cognitive economy responsible for habits-as-heuristics parallels what this paper…
