The Influence of Intolerance of Uncertainty on Anxiety and Depression Symptoms in Chinese-speaking Samples: Structure and Validity of The Chinese Translation of The Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale
Few studies evaluated the structure of the short versions of the Chinese translation of the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS) among Chinese-speaking individuals. Meanwhile, contemporary theory of IU has emphasized the role of IU as the basic transdiagnostic mechanism underlying emotional disorders, and further empirical support is awaited. Thus, the current research aimed to examine the structure of the IUS (Chinese translation) and the hier…
Vigilance-Avoidance Toward Negative Faces in Social Anxiety With and Without Comorbid Depression
Despite the growing evidence for the attentional bias toward emotional related stimuli in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD), it remains unclear how the attentional bias manifests in normal individuals with SAD and/or depressive traits. To address this question, we recruited three groups of normal participants with different psychiatric traits-individuals with comorbid SAD and depression (SADd, N = 19), individuals with only SAD (SAD, N …
An Internet-Based Intervention for Individuals With Social Anxiety and Different Levels of Taijin Kyofusho in China
The aim of the present study is to investigate the efficacy of internet-based cognitive behavior therapy (ICBT) for individuals with social anxiety (SA) and different levels of Taijin Kyofusho (TKS) in China. The ICBT program was translated into Chinese with some specific contents adapted for Chinese culture. Participants ( N = 80) with SA were assigned either to a treatment ( n = 55) or control group ( n = 25). Both groups were further divided i…

Social Anxiety and Interpretation Bias: Effect of Positive Priming
This study examined how positive-scale assessment of ambiguous social stimuli affects interpretation bias in social anxiety. Participants with high and low social anxiety (N = 60) performed a facial expression discrimination task to assess interpretation bias. Participants were then randomly assigned to assess the emotion of briefly presented faces either on a negative or on a positive scale. They subsequently repeated the facial expression discr…
Understanding the Impact of Natural Disasters on Psychological Outcomes in Youth from Mainland China: A Meta-Analysis of Risk and Protective Factors for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental illness that causes significant distress and impairment. Studies generally indicate lower rates of PTSD post-disaster in Chinese child populations. Irrespective of population examined, findings suggest that trauma alone cannot account for the development of PTSD (Ma et al. 2011). It is important to understand what other variables may contribute to the onset of PTSD. This was the first meta-analysi…
Specific Effects of Anger Rumination on Particular Executive Functions
The effects of two types of rumination on different kinds of executive functions were investigated. Fifty-nine participants (M age = 22.8 yr., SD = 2.5) were assigned to one of three conditions and instructed either to: (1) ruminate in a self-distanced way, (2) ruminate in a self-immersed way, or (3) think about the layout of their campus following anger induction. Afterward, the participants were directed to finish tasks designed to assess three…
Validation of the Tosca-3 Among Chinese Young Adults
In this study, we translated into Chinese the Test of Self-Conscious Affect Version 3 (TOSCA-3) and examined the reliability and validity using 3 independent samples of Chinese young adults. The Chinese version (TOSCA-3C) showed acceptable internal consistency and test-retest reliability in all its subscales except for the 2 pride scales. Shame-proneness was found to be positively correlated with trait shame, state anxiety, and fear of negative e…
Counselling and psychotherapy services in more developed and developing regions in China: A comparative investigation of practitioners and current service delivery
BACKGROUND: Counselling and psychotherapy services have taken off with uneven speed across China since the 1980s after several years of stagnation. Researchers have attributed socioeconomic development (or the lack thereof) and regional differences as main barriers to the development in this field. However, little is known today about the status of counselling and psychotherapy services across China. AIMS: To investigate and compare the current s…
Validation of the Empathy Quotient – Short Form among Chinese healthcare professionals
In this study we validated the Empathy Quotient Short Form (EQ-Short; Wakabayashi et al., 2006) with a sample of Chinese nurses and nursing students. Factor analyses indicated that 15 of the 22 EQ-Short items presented a 1-component structure across the sample. In terms of concurrent validity, moderate correlations were found between the empathy quotient and factors E, F, O, and Q3 extracted from the 16 personality factors. Trained nurses reporte…

Reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4: A study with Chinese college students
The Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4+ (PDQ-4+) has been regarded as an effective instrument for screening people with personality disorders in Western countries. Recently, it has also been widely used in research of personality disorders on the Chinese mainland. Using a sample of 4,811 Chinese college students, the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the PDQ-4+ (Yang, Rorbert, & Paul, 2000) were examined. Results indicated th…
Differentiating Shame and Guilt from a Relational Perspective: A Cross-Cultural Study
In this study we used the self-afflicted versus other-afflicted model to differentiate between shame and guilt among Chinese and American college students. Two scenarios with the same background but a different combination of protagonists were used to test the model. Results showed that the model was confirmed in the Chinese sample and received certain support in the American sample. The implications of the findings are discussed
Relationships between attachment and personality disorder symptoms of chinese college students
Links between attachment in childhood and the appearance of personality disorders later in life have been traced in recent years. In this study we explored the relationship between attachment quality and personality disorder symptoms of 1,611 college students in mainland China. The results indicated that there were significant positive correlations between scores gained on the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire (PDQ-4+; Hyler, 1994) and factor …
Transferred Shame in the Cultures of Interdependent-Self and Independent Self
The construal of the self is related to individuals' cognition, emotion and behavior. The aim of this study was to investigate shame in the context of interdependent-self and independent-self culture. 163 Chinese and 196 American college undergraduates completed a questionnaire about their reaction to 3 different scenarios about shameful events involving 5 different persons including self, mother, boy/girl friend, best friend and classmate. The p…
Predicting depressive symptoms with a new measure of shame: The Experience of Shame Scale
Objective. To investigate whether previous findings from interview studies of a prospective relationship between shame and psychopathology (e.g. Andrews, 1995) could be replicated using questionnaires. Design. A total of 163 university students participated in a longitudinal questionnaire study. Method. The Experience of Shame Scale (ESS), a questionnaire based on a previous interview measure, and an established shame scale (TOSCA), were consider…
