The Cyclical Temporalities of Capitalist Social Reproduction
This article analyses the temporalities of capitalist social reproduction, which occurs in every spatiotemporal setting by orchestrating a plurality of heterogeneous collective rhythms, in conjunction with myriad others of biological, cultural, or cosmic provenance. Despite the pervasiveness of abstract clock time, capitalist social reproduction is inherently cyclical, involving the ongoing orchestration of a plurality of interconnected rhythms, …
Out of joint? The dual character of capitalist temporal domination
This essay investigates the peculiarities of contemporary temporal experiences under capitalism by analysing its relationship to the capitalist ‘form’ adopted by social reproduction. It argues that the extent and modalities in which capital mediates the field of social reproduction is responsible for the widespread time-related concerns and anxieties relative to social acceleration and time scarcity. The abstract time of the clock provides crucia…
The “Temporal Rift” and the Temporalities of the Capitalist Social Metabolism
This paper advances a reading of the social metabolism as a dynamic orchestration of heterogeneous rhythms, encompassing those intrinsic to human bodies and other natural processes, and those of relations mediating both. Contrary to pre‐capitalist societies, as the collective mediation of the social metabolism adopts a capitalist form, it becomes autonomised from its conditions of existence, and a “temporal rift” emerges, with two distinct dimens…
Social reproduction theory and the capitalist ‘form’ of social reproduction
This paper critically interrogates the meaning attached to social reproduction in the so-called Social Reproduction Theory [SRT]. While SRT represents an improvement over competing approaches to social reproduction along several dimensions, its understanding of social reproduction as referring exclusively to the ongoing reproduction of labour-power does not fully capture the extent to which the reproduction of social life is mediated by the repro…
Working on working women
This article deploys the notion of ‘employable femininity’, by which we refer to the mystification along postfeminist lines of an idealized womanhood suitable to be employed and worked upon, in order to explore how women’s relation to employment is currently being articulated and contested in contemporary Spain. Structural transformations during neoliberalism have promoted women’s rising involvement into labor markets while, simultaneously, reinf…
The Long-Term Vulnerabilities of Spanish Capitalism in Light of the Covid-19 Pandemic
This article explores the evolution of Spain’s capitalism during the last decades in order to unveil the factors underlying the harshness with which the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted Spain. We present a twofold thesis. On the one hand, we argue that Spanish capitalism has harbored certain internal vulnerabilities, relative to its productive specialization, its labor market, its welfare institutions, and indebtedness levels, which successive boom…
Lessons of the Podemos Experiment
A decade after the 15-M movement, how to assess Podemos’s strategy and the ‘populist hypothesis’ on which it was based? After three years in government with the Spanish Socialists, a political and intellectual balance sheet from two participants
Quand l’usine ferme
Capitalism and Political Strategy in Post-Marxist Discourse Theory. Reply to Jacobs
In this paper, I provide a short reply to Jacobs’s critical appraisal of my previous article, “Ernesto Laclau’s Oblivion of Political Economy,” published in this journal, volume 32, number 2 (2020). There, I had argued that Laclau’s post-Marxism suffered from a marked incapacity to theorize the extent to which capitalist dynamics affect ongoing hegemonic struggles. In this regard, Jacobs argues that I implicitly resort to an ontological dualism a…
Capitalism, Institutions and SocialOrders
Capitalism, Institutions and Social Orders develops a novel political economy approach by establishing a dialogue between the Social Structures of Accumulation (SSA) theory and Ernesto Laclau’s post-Marxism theory. Using this synthesis, it provides an in-depth analysis of Spain’s recent socio-economic evolution since the early 1990s. The book develops a theoretical framework capable of appraising capitalist dynamics together with their relationsh…
Capitalism, Institutions and Social Orders
The Contradictory Evolution of “Mediterranean” Neoliberalism in Spain, 1995–2008
This paper uses social structures of accumulation theory in combination with Ernesto Laclau’s discourse theory in order to analyze the institutional mechanisms that sustained the long economic expansion of the Spanish economy between 1995 and 2008. Productive deficiencies endogenously gave way to several trends that, despite displaying a highly contradictory character when considered in isolation, managed to coalesce into a relatively coherent wh…
Ernesto Laclau’s Oblivion of Political Economy
Post-Marxist discourse theory, initially developed by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, has become a central node of contemporary critical theory. This essay explores how, in their attack against orthodox Marxism, Laclau and Mouffe self-consciously expelled political economy from the vast array of post-Marxism's theoretical influences. While attempts have been offered to theorize capitalism while respecting discourse theory's ontological postula…
Grounding Populism upon Political Economy
While the notion of populism has gained greater conceptual clarity in the work of Ernesto Laclau, its material conditions of existence have not yet been properly theorized. In order to grasp populism's historical specificity, an analysis of the internal dynamics of capitalism is required. A crucial distinction between Liberal and Regulated Social Structures of Accumulation (SSAs) reveals that the types of organic crisis associated with the former…
