Pre‐school children with and without developmental delay
Background Children with intellectual disability are at heightened risk for behaviour problems and diagnosed mental disorder. Methods The present authors studied the early manifestation and continuity of problem behaviours in 205 pre‐school children with and without developmental delays. Results Behaviour problems were quite stable over the year from age 36–48 months. Children with developmental delays were rated higher on behaviour problems than…
Empirically based assessment of the behavioral/emotional problems of 2- and 3- year-old children
Behavioral Problems and Competencies Reported by Parents of Normal and Disturbed Children Aged Four Through Sixteen
The study was designed (a) to provide prevalence data on behavioral problems and competencies, (b) to identify differences related to demographic variables, and (c) to compare clinically referred and demographically similar nonreferred children. Data were obtained with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), consisting of 20 social competence items and 118 behavior problems. Parents of 1,300 referred children completed the CBCL at intake into outpat…
Hierarchical Cluster Analysis Using Intraclass Correlations
Sixteen hierarchical clustering algorithms were compared on their ability to resolve 20 multivariate normal mixtures (Blashfield, 1976) and 12 multivariate gamma mixtures (Mojena, 1977). The 16 algorithms represented a 4 x 4 (amalgamation rule x similarity measure) design. The amalgamation rules were single, complete, average, and centroid linkage. The similarity measures were Euclidean distance, correlation, and the one-way and two-way intraclas…
Running Away from Home
PARENTratings of the behavior of 2,967 children aged 4-16 who had been referred for mental health services and 1,300 nonreferred children were analyzed with the goal of determining the incidence and correlates of running away from home. Running away was from 5-30 times more frequent among referred children than among normal children. Several behavioral problems were significantly associated with running away among referred children, including tru…

Mixture Model Tests Of Hierarchical Clustering Algorithms
Due to the effects of outliers, mixture model tests that require all objects to be classified can severely underestimate the accuracy of hierarchical clustering algorithms. More valid and relevant comparisons between algorithms can be made by calculating accuracy at several levels in the hierarchical tree and considering accuracy as a function of the coverage of the classification. Using this procedure, several algorithms were compared on their a…
