The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on people with disabilities
In this paper, we relied on co-researching with persons with disabilities in Ukraine not as a means of understanding the epidemiology of this disease, or of its impact on human health. We approached COVID-19 and the Ukrainian authorities’ response to the pandemic as proxy, or a magnifying glass, to better understand the everyday life of persons with disabilities in Ukraine, and to explore how things could and should be done differently in the con…
Gender Socialization, Family Leadership, and the Invisible Father in Children's Literature
Objective: This study examines the portrayals of mothers and fathers in children's picture books read by millions of parents and children in their formative years. We investigate the extent to which these books present rigid parental stereotypes that misrepresent the potential of family leaders. Method: We performed a content analysis of 203 prominent children's picture books from recent years to assess the appearances, activities, and emotions o…
Point-of-Care Diagnostics for Diagnosis of Active Syphilis Infection
Syphilis, a curable sexually transmitted infection, has re-emerged as a global public health threat with an estimated 5.6 million new cases every year. Pregnant women and men who have sex with men are key target populations for syphilis control and prevention programs. Frequent syphilis testing for timely and accurate diagnosis of active infections for appropriate clinical management is a key strategy to effectively prevent disease transmission. …
The Cost of Home Birth in the United States
Policy decisions about the accessibility of home birth hinge on questions of safety and affordability. Families consider safety and cost along with the comfort and familiarity of birthing venues. A substantial literature addresses safety concerns, generally reporting that for low-risk mothers in the care of credentialed midwives, the safety of planned home births is comparable to that in birth centers and hospitals. The lack of notable safety tra…
Pivoting to Childbirth at Home or in Freestanding Birth Centers1 in the US During Covid-19
Birth-related decisions principally center on safety; giving birth during a pandemic brings safety challenges to a new level, especially when choosing the birth setting. Amid the COVID-19 crisis, the concurrent work furloughs, business failures, and mounting public and private debt have made prudent expenditures an inescapable second concern. This article examines the intersections of safety, economic efficiency, insurance, liability and birthing…

The Aggregate Burden of Crime
This study estimates the total annual cost of criminal behavior in the United States. While past research has typically focused on particular costs, regions, or crime categories, this general study estimates all of the direct and indirect costs of crime for the entire nation. In addition to aggregating expenses commonly associated with unlawful activity, it considers ancillary costs that have not yet been included in an overall formula for the co…

A Distant Heritage
Public institutions
Policy-makers ignore the fact that they are very much a part of the forces restricting most black people to slums; they seem equally oblivious to the extent to which they have a vested interest in the maintenance of slum conditions. Their attitudes account for their failures. Evidence is drawn from an analysis of responses of institutions and administrators to the problem of lead poisoning of a young child in Rochester, N.Y
