Siblinghood Amongst Older Adults: What Being a Sibling or Having Siblings Means
The aim of this study is to understand siblinghood in old age through the perspective of Czech older adults. Forty-one in-depth interviews were analyzed, and four themes characterizing siblinghood among older persons were identified in the data: (1) Siblinghood as a unique bond, understood through genetic relatedness, the sense of belongingness, shared memories, and awareness of being the last members of the family of origin. (2) Being consanguin…
Siblings in Old Age - Relationships 'On the Edge
Older age, especially advanced age, is accompanied by changes in the social relations amongst the elderly and specifically by a decrease in the size of their social networks: peers pass away and contact with other people may be restricted, often due to declining physical and mental strength. Gerontosociology notes the elderly's preferential focus on the family, which is usually defined in terms of intergenerational relationships and a support net…
Siblinghood in Older Age: A Contribution to a Theoretical Discussion
This article examines the issue of siblinghood in older age. The author starts by referring to sociological studies criticising the a-theoricity of empirical research in this field. She proceeds to analyse the most influential theoretical approaches used to study relationships between parents and their adult children (i.e. the theory of intergenerational solidarity and the theory/concept of intergenerational ambivalence) and to critically assess …
The Social Role(s) of Poor Seniors
The article deals with poverty in old age, which the author studies through the concept of social roles or social status. She analyses data from a qualitative empirical study in order to understand how various aspects of poverty in old age and the status of being poor impact seniors' performance of social roles. The author approaches poverty and old age as stigmas and looks at the ways in which seniors living in poverty defend their identity agai…
Socio-spatial aspects of ageing in an urban context: An example from three Czech Republic cities
The purpose of this study is to examine how older people make sense of the changing urban environment – that is, how they experience, perceive and interpret their everyday interaction with its materiality, as well as their social ties, networks and relations. The results, based on seven focus groups and 37 individual in-depth interviews with older residents of the three most populous Czech cities, show how older people maintain the continuity of …
Seniors in the City: On the Periphery of a Big Issue
In this article the author presents the outcome of the first 'qualitative' stage of the project 'Old Age in Space: Regeneration, Gentrification and Social Exclusion as New Issues of Environmental Gerontology'. She responds to research questions on how seniors residing in urban centres interpret the town environment, contemporary urban processes, ageing and old age, and how they maintain control over their situation given their state of health, ph…
Prostor a věci v kontextu stáří [Space and Things in the Context of Ageing]
The article examines the meanings that space and things acquire in the context of ageing and old age. The author draws on a study that was conducted with the objective of understanding the signifi cance of autonomy in old age and the ways in which the elderly attempt to maintain it. The data from this study were subjected to a follow-up qualitative analysis based on the reformulated research question: 'What role do space and things play in the li…
Bezdětnost ve stáří. K sociální integraci bezdětných seniorů [Childlessness in Old Age. The Social Integration of Childless Seniors]
Childless old age is often directly linked to social isolation and loneliness. This article is based on a qualitative analysis of interviews from a research project on strategies used by the seniors to maintain their personal autonomy, the results of which demonstrated that the informal and particularly the family networks of childless elderly people are not always any less wide or dense than those of other senior citizens. An evident preconditio…
From Solidarity as a Basis of Intergenerational Family Relations to Ambivalence and Negotiation
The author deals with the issue of family relationships and the exchange of help and support within a family. She analyses the development of theoretical studies of this problem in Western sociology in the past ten years. The article is linked to a previous article the author published in the Czech Sociological Review in 1996, in which she summarised the preceding decade. This time the article is not conceived as a 'classical' survey, but instead…
Family system of help and aid against the background of social transformation
This paper sums up the results of empirical research into the intergenerational solidarity in Czech families which should help to answer the question whether the family or the kinship system can discharge their self-supportive potential adequately under the pressures of the transformation processes during the 1990s. It also describes the macro-social framework, i.e. the socio-political, economic and demographic context that influences the quantit…
The Family and Community in Central Europe
The author summarises the results of an empirical inquiry carried out in the years 1996-1997 in selected municipalities of Northern Moravia as a part of the international project "Family and Community in Central Europe". Alongside the Czech Republic, Poland and the Slovak Republic equally participated in the research. It was focused on the special problems of the family and family life at present, on the strategies of family behaviour in the new …
The Empty-Nest within the Kin Support System. Conceptual frameworks of solidarity among relatives with the accent on Anglo-Saxon sociological literature
In the article the author presents information on conceptual frameworks explaining the relations among family generations and the function of kinship networks in contemporary societies within our cultural domain. Given the marginal position of this topic in Czech sociology, she first examines Anglo-Saxon sociological literature, enumerates those subjects which are currently the centre of interest in sociological and social gerontological research…
