Gender differences in intentions to seek personal counselling
Given the negative effects that anxiety and stress can have on university students’ academic performance, work, and relationships, it is important to identify factors associated with intentions to seek personal counselling. We identified social self-concept, students’ beliefs about their abilities and confidence in social situations, as a mediator in the relationship between gender and intentions to seek personal counselling. To test our hypothes…
Gender, civic engagement, and the importance of integrating spirituality
Spirituality is associated with a variety of positive life outcomes, and the university experience has long been regarded as a critical period of spiritual identity development. A key explanation for why gender differences exist in the importance of integrating spirituality in one’s life may be that civic engagement is intervening in the relationship. We administered surveys to 964 first-year undergraduate students in the western United States. W…
The Mediating Effects of Social Self-Concept on Gender, Sexual Orientation, and Parenting Intentions
College students' parenting intentions have received increased attention by scholars around the world in recent years, but little is known about potential demographic differences affecting the decision, such as gender and sexual orientation. The study proposed and empirically examined a model of the relationships between gender, sexual orientation, social self-concept, and parenting intentions in a large sample of university students on the west …
Science self-efficacy in the relationship between gender & science identity
Historically women have been underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Some scholars have suggested that science self-concept perceptions have contributed to this gender gap. We propose and empirically examine a model of the relationships between gender, sexual orientation, science self-efficacy, and science identity. Specifically, we hypothesise that a key explanation for why gender differences in…
The Influence of Goal Commitment and Partner Status on Team Assignment Outcomes
The present study replicated and extended research on the influence of team assignment methods on task performance and fairness perceptions. This study examined the influence of team assignment methods, goal commitment, and partner status on team member performance and fairness perceptions in a laboratory setting. The assignment conditions were comprised of three variables: assignment method (random, self-decision, and ability), performer status …

Perception in Consequences of Fkee Riding
This study examined the relationships between perceptions of group members' free riding and group outcomes using Mulvey and Klein's 1998 perceived free riding scale. In a laboratory study, three free riding conditions were created (no free riding, free riding, free riding with justification) in which 97 college students performed two short number-finding tasks as members of temporary ad hoc three-person groups. 55% of the students were male and t…

Peer versus Authority as Decision Maker
In a role-playing study, 264 university students evaluated the fairness of procedures and outcomes used to punish a student for plagiarizing from a web site. Individuals reading the scenario gave the highest ratings of justice when the decision maker was a group of nonpeers (faculty), compared to when the decision maker was an individual or peer (student). Sex and self reported guilt of individuals reading the scenario also influenced their ratin…

Relationships of Collective Orientation and Cohesion to Team Outcomes
The relationships of collective orientation and cohesion to team outcomes were compared for 373 high school students on 12 different types of two-person teams performing simple problems in mathematics. Scores on collective orientation and cohesion were highly correlated with each other and with team outcomes but not statistically distinct from each other
