The Racialization of Latino Families
While racial and demographic changes producing a multiracial United States are well-acknowledged in the family field, insufficient attention is given to Latinos as a racialized population. As the Latino population continues to expand, it is essential for family studies to move beyond a Black/White binary. We call for making race and racialization central building blocks in research and analysis of Latino families. This paper provides an overview …
Daughters and Granddaughters of Farmworkers
In Daughters and Granddaughters of Farmworkers , Barbara Wells examines the work and family lives of Mexican American women in a community near the U.S.-Mexican border in California’s Imperial County. Decades earlier, their Mexican parents and grandparents had made the momentous decision to migrate to the United States as farmworkers. This book explores how that decision has worked out for these second- and third-generation Mexican Americans. Wel…
The Benefits of Marriage Reconsidered
This paper suggests that analyses of marriage experience take into account both structures of inequality and context. Although marriage is widely viewed as producing economic well-being and family stability, this analysis of a sample of White rural families finds the likelihood of realizing these benefits to be closely related to social class position. Marriage failed to produce these benefits for many working class and poor families. Although ga…
Provision of Care to the Underserved Populations by National Health Service Corps Alumni Dentists
A small number of factors were associated with alumni NHSC dentists' decisions to continue to provide care for the underserved populations. Targeting African-American students and students interested in caring for the underserved may improve the long-term commitment of dentists to provide care for the underserved populations. Attention will also need to be given to increased salary as a potential intervention to increase the numbers of dentists w…
Women's Voices
This paper explores how a multiclass sample of white rural women in an economically depressed, overwhelmingly nonfarm community explain both their own families' economic circumstances and those of the most disadvantaged families in their community. All women in the sample-even those with a history of economic instability and welfare receipt-articulate an ethic of family self-sufficiency. They uniformly believe that anyone who can work should work…
Ambulatory Care Sensitive Hospitalizations and Emergency Visits
BACKGROUND: Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) serve as regular sources of preventive and primary care for low-income families within their communities and are key parts of the health care safety net. OBJECTIVES: Compare admissions and emergency room visits for ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSCs) among Medicaid beneficiaries relying on FQHCs to other Medicaid beneficiaries. RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of 1992 Medicaid…
Targeting the underserved for breast and cervical cancer screening
OBJECTIVES: This study tested the utility of ecological variables created from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) for strategic targeting of health services for the underserved. METHODS: Ecological variables were created using the 1989-1991 survey years of the NHIS public use data files. Segments, the NHIS secondary sampling units, permit computation of secondary sampling characteristics by percentage Black, percentage Hispanic, percenta…
Who participates in cardiovascular disease risk factor screenings? Experience with a religious organization-based program
Adult members who declined participation in cardiovascular disease risk factor screenings offered at religious organizations were randomly selected and asked to participate in screenings at their homes. Relationships between screening participation and sociodemographic, behavioral, and physiological measures were examined. Age, knowledge of cardiovascular disease risk factors, body mass index, current smoking status, previous report of elevated b…
Stage at diagnosis in breast cancer
Cancer incidence data from three US metropolitan areas were coupled with census tract indicators of education and income. The data suggest that both Black and White cancer patients living in census tracts with lower median education/income values are diagnosed in later disease stages than are patients in tracts with higher median education/income values. Within education and income strata, Black women had a less favorable stage of disease at diag…
The effectiveness and feasibility of delivering nutrition education programs through religious organizations
As part of a comprehensive cardiovascular disease primary prevention research program carried out through volunteers working within their own religious organizations (ROs), a small group nutrition education program was tested. During the first year of the research program (the Health and Religious Project) 41 lay volunteers from 16 ROs were trained and certified to lead a 7 week (1 hour per week) nutrition education program designed to help the p…
Predictors of female nocturnal orgasms
Variables predicting the reported occurrence and frequency of nocturnal orgasms among women are reported. Undergraduate and graduate women (N = 245) from a large midwestern university volunteered to complete nine self‐report scales and inventories. Thirty‐seven percent of the sample reported they had experienced nocturnal orgasm, and 30% reported having had the experience in the past year. The predictors accounted for a statistically significant …
