Gender-Affirming Care
Introduction Health of transgender people is a globally relevant issue, and research on the topic has expanded rapidly in the 21st century, warranting a bibliometric approach. We aim to characterize the transgender health-related publication landscape and describe the current state of research. Methods A bibliometric analysis was conducted in Medline, restricted to publications indexed after December 31, 1999. The search string contained keywords …
Measuring Laypeople’s Notions of Intersex
Introduction Intersex people can face serious stigmatization and discrimination, which may be reinforced by a lack of information and knowledge in the general society. The first objective of this study was to develop and validate a scale for measuring both knowledge of the term intersex and attitudes toward intersex people in the general population. A second aim was to establish a baseline measurement in a representative sample in the Netherlands…
Questioning gender identity in adolescent population research
Standardized questions to assess gender identity within adolescent population research are currently lacking. This study aims to develop and pilot brief and user-friendly self-report questions, the Gender Identity Questions for Adolescents (GIQA). A four-phase mixed-method study consisting of a literature search, expert panel, cognitive interviews, and pilot study was employed. First, using insights from nine existing questionnaires on gender ide…
Differences in risk for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among sexual and gender minority young adults and the moderating role of social support
Sexual and gender minority (SGM) young adults are at higher risk for suicidal ideation and attempts than heterosexual, cisgender young adults. Research concerning differences by gender identity in risk for suicidal ideation and attempts is limited. This study examined whether SGM young adults (cisgender sexual minority, genderqueer, and transgender) differed in risk for suicidal ideation and attempts and whether social support (family, heterosexu…
An assessment of the proportion of LGB+ persons in the Belgian population, their identification as sexual minority, mental health and experienced minority stress
The proportion of persons who identified as LGB+ was twice as large as the proportion of persons who identified as a minority based on their sexual orientation. LGB+ persons show poorer mental health compared to heterosexual persons. This difference was unrelated to minority stress, sociodemographic differences, minority identification, or the importance attached to minority characteristics

Trans Laws and Constitutional Rulings in Belgium
In this article we reflect upon the evolution from the Belgian trans law of 2007 to those of 2017 and beyond, giving adult citizens the possibility to have their self-determined gender legally recognised. The 2019 ruling of the Belgian Constitutional Court, condemning the Belgian State for being discriminatory against gender fluid and gender non-binary persons regarding their legal gender recognition, requires the Belgian government to either add…
Transforming the paradigm of nonbinary transgender health
Sexual health, transition-related risk behavior and need for health care among transgender sex workers
Background: Research has shown that sexual risk behavior, as well as transition-related risk behavior, such as uncontrolled hormone use, auto-medication, and silicone injections, may lead to several adverse health outcomes for transgender persons. Transgender sex workers are a vulnerable group within the transgender population, who are at increased risk for these health risk behaviors. However, European research into this topic and risk populatio…
Health disparities between binary and non binary trans people
Background: Genderqueer and nonbinary () people have remained largely invisible in health research. Previous research shows worse outcomes on health indicators for trans people when compared with cisgender controls, but the differences between binary trans and GQNB individuals are inconclusive. Aims: To compare overall health and well-being of GQNB people with controls of trans men and trans women, taking into account the impact of the additive e…
Role Ambiguity and Role Conflict Among Partners of Trans People
Experiences of family members are often overlooked in social research on gender transitions. The current article aims to address this gap by considering the experiences of partners during a gender transition, approaching this topic through role theory and the concepts of role ambiguity and role conflict. Seventeen partners and former partners were interviewed. First, we distinguished three different roles of partners during the transition: the co…
Transgender and non-binary persons and sexual risk
Research shows that HIV prevalence in transgender and non-binary persons is extremely high, with prevalence rates ranging up to 52.4% (Edwards et al., 2007). This high risk is associated with a number of (trans-specific) factors, such as stigma, discrimination, normative gender roles, involvement in sex work, a lack of knowledge about safe sex and an inaccurate perception of risk. This article critically reviews the last 10 years of research on t…
Introduction to the themed issue
This themed issue, ‘Trans* policy, practice and lived experience within a European context’, emerges at a time when global understandings of gender are rapidly changing across social, cultural, political, policy and legal spheres. The understanding of gender as the materialisation of the categories of male or female that are fixed at birth is in flux, and this issue speaks to these shifts at conceptual, procedural and empirical levels

Beyond the Box
While various studies have examined sexist, homophobic, lesbophobic, biphobic, and transphobic attitudes, no comprehensive research has yet combined all of these attitudes in all of their dimensions (cognitive beliefs, affect, and behaviour). Furthermore, most previous studies have failed to take the influences of respondents’ sexual orientation and gender identity into consideration in their analyses. The Beyond the Box survey, conducted in Belg…
