  • Differential updating and morality

Open Access•Florian Kaiser, Björn Hu et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Criminology•2023

The majority of differential deterrability research has investigated whether people differ in the extent to which a perceived threat of sanctions deters them from committing a crime. Less is known about the differential influence of criminal justice intervention on sanction threat perceptions. According to deterrence theory, however, for justice intervention to successfully deter crime, a process of perceptual updating is required. In the current…

  • Induced Abortion and Life Satisfaction in Germany

    Open Access•Björn Hu, Florian Kaiser•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Soziologie•2022•References: 6

Unintended pregnancies resulting in induced abortion are occasionally associated with poor psychological well-being. In the literature, this is attributed to either (1) the consequences of abortion, (2) the consequences of unintended pregnancy, or (3) specific selection processes. This longitudinal study addresses these explanations based on data from the German family panel “pairfam” (n = 3,604 women). It compares changes in life satisfaction am…

  • Well-Being Before and After Pregnancy Termination

    Open Access•Björn Hu•ARTICLE•Journal of Happiness Studies•2021

The consequences of pregnancy outcomes other than live birth on subjective well-being have rarely been analysed in research to date. This study examines pre-event determinants as well as the temporary and long-term effects of induced abortion and miscarriage (spontaneous abortion) on satisfaction with various domains of life. The data were derived from the German Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics (pairfam). The longitud…

  • Don’t blame the kids

Björn Hu, Matthias Pollmann‐schult•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Studies•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Single, separated mothers report lower levels of psychological well-being than partnered mothers. This study examines whether this penalty in well-being results from the burdens of single parenting or from the stress and strain of union dissolution. The data come from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). Our sample consists of 1919 childless women and mothers who reported a union dissolution. We used fixed effects models to examine changes in …

  • Relationship Satisfaction Across the Transition to Parenthood

    Open Access•Björn Hu, Matthias Pollmann‐schult et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 69

The transition to parenthood is often accompanied by declines in relationship satisfaction. Using longitudinal data from six waves of the German family panel pairfam ( N = 1,739), the authors tested whether these declines are driven by increases in and more intense forms of conflict (differential exposure hypothesis) and by a greater sensitivity to relationship conflicts after the transition to parenthood (differential vulnerability hypothesis). …
