The Necropolitics of Psychiatric Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide (pEAS)
The thrust of this conceptual piece is to critique the State granting medical assistance in dying (MAiD) access to those whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental disorder through a necropolitical lens. First, I introduce Mbembe’s (2003) Necropolitics as this paper’s theoretical framework. Second, I argue how the State grants the psy-profession free rein to deploy its armory of necropolitical tactics to entangle the psychiatrized in its…
Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy, chemical retraumatization, and madness
Protecting the Section 7 autonomy rights of Canadian consumers/survivors/ex-patients and the mad (c/s/x/m), as enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, with past experiences of enduring intrusive procedures forced upon them, to decline immunization against COVID-19 is a mad liberation issue, to which Mad Studies must not shut its eyes. To some c/s/x/m, vaccine mandates mirror traumatic moments from their psychiatric past, when th…
The pedagogy of saneness
This article is an autoethnographic account of a ‘schizoaffective’ sufferer learning about and navigating the environs of saneness as a graduate student resisting traditional sane pedagogic structures. Culling from theories found in adult education, Whiteness Studies, and Mad Studies to show that saneness can be conceptualized as a site of critical pedagogy, the author narrates numerous ways in which saneness is embedded in schools and society. I…
(Dis)Arming the madman
The protection of American mental health consumers’ Second Amendment rights is the ‘mad’ liberation issue of the twenty-first century. Federal laws currently dispossess the differently minded of their Second Amendment access and rights to bear firearms. In response to a spate of school shootings, ‘Red flag laws’ are used in an effort to circumvent mad citizens’ rights to self-preservation and defence. In this article I am proposing neither a poli…
Trump, proto-presidency, and the rise of sane supremacy
This articles opines that America’s far-Left is sowing the seeds of ‘sane supremacy’: first, by unapologetically tarring President Trump as ‘insane’ for political purposes; and, second, legislating for psychiatry to colonize the White House so as to remove Trump on account of his suspected ‘insanity’. This article deploys an anti-sanist lens and uses the notion of ‘prototypicality’ to show how the regressive far-Left portrays Trump as not meeting…
