History on the margins
This essay reflects upon the challenges and the achievements of an exploration of the marginalized experiences of the armed conflict in Colombia. Our methods – interdisciplinary, rooted in an ethos of co-production and openness to a great plurality of ways of storytelling – have created a fuller and richer representation of the horrors of war and their consequences. The lessons we have learned through making it happen will have major policy and a…
Present-oriented reconciliation and reparative futures in the making – The case of Rodeemos el Diálogo in Colombia
Today, policymakers and practitioners are encouraged to see reconciliation as a future- oriented process. While liberal peace paradigms conceive of reconciliation as something that lies ahead of us, achievable and measurable in linear processes, I contest teleological notions of reconciliation by drawing on evolutionary theory and neuroscience. Drawing on practical examples from the complex political contingencies in Colombia, this article positions the concept of Peace Process Pedagogy within discussions in Critical Peace Education …
Genocide, Geopolitics and Transnational Networks
Jihad and Genocide
Jihad and Genocide is a suggestive title which could be interpreted as a contribution to unwrap the relationship between war and genocide. Although Rubenstein seeks to show how jihad became genocid
Safeguarding Political Guarantees in the Colombian Peace Process
This article discusses the lessons of previous peace processes between the government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (farc). It has two policy implications. In regard to Colombia it suggests that safeguarding the lives of demobilised farc members is necessary for the current peace process to succeed, hence it proposes a hybrid Specialised Protection Force (spf). In terms of peace building the article discusses the chal…
Perpetrator blocs, genocidal mentalities and geographies
This article presents the destruction of the Union Patritica (UP) in Colombia during the 1980s and 1990s as a case of genocide. As the UP was a political front, the article relies on the already longstanding debate about the importance of including the protection of political groups against genocide. Although the endeavour is to present the UP genocide, the need of broader genocide understandings underlies it. The paper deals with issues challeng…
