  • Religious Involvement and Cognitive Function Among White, Black, and Hispanic Older Adults

    Open Access•Madison R Sauerteig-Rolston, Lisa L Barnes et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Aging•2025

We examined whether religious involvement was associated with cognitive function among older adults in the 2006–2020 waves of the Health and Retirement Study. Using growth curve analysis, we found the association between religious involvement and cognition varied by facet of religious involvement and race and Hispanic ethnicity. Attending religious services with friends was associated with higher initial levels of cognitive function (b = 0.22, p

  • Are Relationship Patterns Between Parents and Adult Children Associated With ADL Disability Risk in Later Life

    Open Access•Madison R Sauerteig-Rolston, P A Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2025•References: 11

BackgroundThis study examined whether patterns of relationship quality between parents and adult children were associated with the onset of ADL disability in later life.Research Design and MethodsUsing data from the Health and Retirement Study ( N = 8,101), we studied whether support, strain, and patterns of relationships between parents and adult children were related to age of onset of ADL disability among parents.ResultsGreater support from ad…

  • Sustained Purpose in Life is Associated With Slower Cognitive Decline in Older Adults

    Open Access•Elliot Friedman, P A Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2025•References: 7

Objectives Purpose in life is positively associated with cognitive function and better maintenance of cognitive function over time in aging adults. However, purpose in life itself declines over time, and we examined whether such changes are related to changes in cognition and whether this varied by race and ethnicity. Method The current study used 3 waves of data from the nationally representative survey, Health and Retirement Study (HRS; N = 9,8…

  • Early-Life Maternal Relationship Quality and Cognitive Function in Later Life

    Open Access•Wencheng Zhang, Mallory J Bell et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Objectives Based on the life course perspective, attachment theory, and the convoy model, we examined the association between early-life maternal relationship quality and cognitive function in later life. We also examined whether adult social relationships mediate this relationship. Methods We utilized longitudinal data (2006–2020) from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS, 50 years or older) and latent growth curve models to examine the associat…

  • Disparities in the Life Course Origins of Dual Functionality

    Open Access•Kenneth F Ferraro, Madison R Sauerteig-Rolston et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2025•References: 46

Although research has identified how stressors are related to either physical or cognitive function in later life, we bridge these literatures by examining dual functionality (neither physical nor cognitive impairment) among Black, White, and Hispanic adults. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (2006-2016), we investigated whether stressors and resources during childhood and adulthood are related to functional loss at baseline and lon…

  • Educational Inequalities in Dual-Function Life Expectancy

    Open Access•Shawn Bauldry, P A Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2024•References: 7

Older adults, particularly women, with less than a high school degree are estimated to live a smaller percentage of their remaining years with dual functionality compared with older adults with at least a college degree. These inequalities have implications for the distribution of caregiving resources of individuals, family members, and the broader healthcare community

  • Early-Life Parental Affection, Social Relationships in Adulthood, and Later-Life Cognitive Function

Open Access•P A Thomas, Elizabeth Teas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Objective Although research has demonstrated the long-term health consequences of childhood adversities, less is known about the long-term impact of positive childhood experiences, such as parental affection. Method Using longitudinal data (1995–2014) from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study, we analyze structural equation models estimating direct and indirect pathways from early-life parental affection to changes in later-life cogniti…

  • Is Early-Life Enrichment Associated With Better Cognitive Function Among Older Adults? Examining Home and School Environments

    Open Access•Mallory J Bell, Madison R Sauerteig-Rolston et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Objectives: We examine whether early-life enrichment, involving varied and stimulating activities to enhance cognitive function during childhood and adolescence, is associated with cognitive function in later life and whether the benefits persist over time. Methods: Growth curve models were used to examine up to five waves of data from the Health and Retirement Study—a nationally representative survey of adults 50 years and older ( N = 10,070). W…

  • Childhood Stressors, Relationship Quality, and Cognitive Health in Later Life

    Open Access•P A Thomas, Monica Williams-Farrelly et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 13

Findings reveal that a stressful childhood creates chains of risks that have lifelong implications for cognitive health, both directly and indirectly by creating obstacles for developing healthy and supportive social relationships

  • Life Course Stressors and Functional Limitations in Later Life Among White, Black, and Hispanic Adults

    Open Access•Madison R Sauerteig-Rolston, Madison R Sauerteig et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Child stressors, in and of themselves, do not increase functional limitations among Black and Hispanic people but are associated with greater adult stress exposure, predisposing them to more functional limitations. Results suggest that childhood stressors are associated with distinct social pathways to functional limitations among White, Black, and Hispanic older adults
