  • Attitudes of Hospital Staff toward Alcoholics and Drug Addicts

Patricia A Sowa, Henry S G Cutter et al.•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of Studies on…•1974

Alcoholics were viewed more favorably than were drug addicts, and high-status staff (e.g., psychiatrists) had less favorable attitudes toward either group that did the low-status (e.g., clerical and housekeeping staff)

  • Alcohol, Power and Inhibition

Henry S G Cutter, John C Key et al.•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of Studies on…•1973

Hospitalized men alcoholics completed the TAT before a fixed dose of alcohol, and an optional second drink was offered before the second TAT. The results indicated that inhibition was more relevant in determining voluntary alcohol consumption than the power needs hypothesized by McClelland

  • Risk-Taking as a Personality Trait

    Open Access•Eric S Knowles, Henry S G Cutter et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1973

Consistencies in risk-taking behavior were investigated in a multi-method, convergent validity study of 13 risk-related measures. Fifty-six student nurses served as subjects. As with earlier studies, a general convergence was not found. However, factor analysis of the correlations indicated two qualitatively different kinds of dimensions. In addition to five strategy traits, a single motivational trait was identified. The motivational trait was i…

John C Key, Henry S G Cutter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•1972

John C. Key, Henry S. G. Cutter, Emil Rothstein, Wyatt C. Jones, Alcohol, Power and Inhibition: A Factor Analytic Evaluation of McClelland's Hypothesis with a Construct Validation of the Factors, Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Vol. 13, No. 4 (Dec., 1972), pp. 337-346

  • Logic of Analysis of Variance in Relation to Predictions and Evaluations of Interaction Means

    Open Access•Henry S G Cutter, Fred Heilizer•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1971

The customary confounding of row and column effects with their interaction is discussed in terms of cell means purported to represent the interaction. Row, column and over-all mean corrections for cell means are outlined that clarify the relation between the mean and variance components of an interaction. Implications of this methodology for graphic and tabular representations of and interpretations of relationships among the means involved in an…

  • Stimulus Characteristics and Reinforcement in Probability Learning

    Open Access•Eugene L Schwaab, Henry S G Cutter•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

This study attempted to examine the influence of variations in stimulus characteristics on choice behavior in a binary-choice probability learning task. Earlier work by Snelbecker and Schwaab (3) suggested that stimulus characteristics may influence response choice and latency on a two-choice operant learning cask. In more recent work (1) some Ss who had to choose between two pictures of racing cars on a probability learning task stated that they…

  • Cooperation among Negro and White Boys and Girls

    Open Access•Thomas C Harford, Thomas Harford et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1966

A recent study of ethnic and sex differences in cooperation in a two-person game indicated that Negro dyads were more cooperative than white dyads (1) . The present study extends the generality of the findings. The two social arrangements were integrated, ethnically mixed dyads and ethnically homogeneous, segregated dyads. Fifry lower class Negro boys and girls and 50 middle class white boys and girls participating in a summer day camp program, w…

  • Aggressive Response Strength as a Function of Interference with Goal-Oriented Responses near to and Far from Their Goal

    Open Access•Henry S G Cutter•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1963

The hypothesis was tested that interference with a goal-oriented activity close to the goal leads to stronger aggressive responses than does interference with a goal-oriented activity far from the goal. One group of fourth-grade Ss attempting to score 100 on a pinball machine task was interfered with by a “tilt” light after scoring 90 points (close to the goal), another group was interfered with by the “tilt” light after scoring 20 points (far fr…
