Trade and Health
Prior reviews have discussed the potential relationship between global economic integration and smoking prevalence, but for the most part, these non-empirical studies have only offered speculative observations. This cross-national study employs two-way fixed effects regression models and a three-way interaction to test whether integration into the global economy, measured as imports (% of GDP), affects male and female smoking prevalence across co…
What Is Driving the Drug Overdose Epidemic in the United States
The demand-side perspective argues that the drug overdose epidemic is a consequence of changes in the economy that leave behind working-class people who lack a college education. In contrast, the supply-side perspective maintains that the epidemic is primarily due to changes in the licit and illicit drug environment, whereas a third, distinct perspective argues that income inequality is likely a key driver of the epidemic. To evaluate these compe…
Avocado Cutting Injuries
Objectives: In the United States (US), avocado consumption has increased dramatically since the year 2000. Despite media attention concerning injuries resulting from cutting or pitting avocados, such injuries have not been monitored systematically. The current study is the first to estimate the number of people with avocado cutting injuries presenting to US hospital emergency departments. Methods: We utilized cross-sectional data from the US Cons…
Electronic cigarette explosion and burn injuries, US Emergency Departments 2015–2017
There are more e-cigarette explosion and burn injuries in the USA than estimated in the past reports. Improved surveillance of e-cigarette injuries and regulation of e-cigarette devices is urgently needed. NEISS could be a valuable resource for e-cigarette injury surveillance

High Alcohol Concentration Products Associated With Poverty and State Alcohol Policies
Objectives. We examined the associations among zip code demographics, the state alcohol policy environment, and the retail outlet availability of multiple fruit-flavored alcoholic drinks in a can (MFAC). Methods. In a nationally representative sample of zip codes (n = 872), we merged data from 4 sources: publicly available marketing information from 2 major MFAC producers, the US Census Bureau, state alcohol regulatory agencies, and recent resear…
Attitudes Associated with Alcohol and Marijuana Referral Actions by Resident Assistants
Associations Between Bar Patron Alcohol Intoxication and Tobacco Smoking
This investigation is the first known study using data collected in an on-premise drinking setting to link alcohol intoxication to specific incidents of tobacco smoking
Drink Specials and the Intoxication Levels of Patrons Exiting College Bars
Introduction to addictive behaviors
Profiles of alcohol- and marijuana-impaired adolescent drivers
The aim of the study was to identify risk factors that distinguish alcohol-impaired and marijuana-impaired drivers from non-impaired drivers, among adolescents with a history of using these substances. An anonymous questionnaire was administered to 6594 seventh- to twelfth-grade students in nine Ohio public school districts. Data analyses were conducted on the 11th to 12th grade sub-sample that had prior experience of alcohol (n = 1378) and/or ma…
The Role of Sex-specific Normative Beliefs in Undergraduate Alcohol Use
The findings challenge the current application of the popular social norms approach that relies on distal drinking norms to provide normative feedback
Use of the Theory of Planned Behavior to Explain HRT Decisions
The TPB is a useful framework for explaining HRT decisions in a period of uncertainty about risks and benefits of the therapy
Diffusion of a Developmental Asset-Building Initiative in Public Schools
Efforts to implement asset-building initiatives need to assess perceptions of adult personnel and should not assume that positive youth development will be widely supported in schools
A Cluster Analytic Study of Osteoprotective Behavior in Undergraduates
Fine-grained stages of osteoprotective behavior are not apparent in young adults, suggesting that the PAPM may not be useful for explaining the adoption of osteoporosis precautions
Balancing Risks and Benefits of Deception in Assessing Genetic Screening Utilization
The paradigm is ethically defensible, it generates useful knowledge about future utilization of alcoholism screening by college students, and it exposes participants to no more than minimal risk. The use of deception to address questions related to predictive genetic screening will require investigators to balance protection of participants with the need to advance knowledge
Adolescent Perceptions of College Student Drinking
Exaggerated perceptions of college student drinking are psychosocial markers of substance use in 7th- to 12th-graders
Alcohol and Motor Vehicle Use: Profile of Drivers and Passengers
Dimensions of Self-Efficacy among Three Distinct Groups of Condom Users
Condom use self-efficacy can be defined as expectations about one's ability to use condoms under a variety of circumstances. This investigation examined the factor structure of the Condom Use Self-Efficacy Scale (CUSES) in an 18- to 23-year-old college population (N = 339) and tested the ability of the factors to distinguish among three groups of condom users (nonusers, sporadic users, and ritualistic users). Emerging from a principal components …
