  • Mortality in US Army Gulf War Veterans Exposed to 1991 Khamisiyah Chemical Munitions Destruction

Tim A Bullman, CLARE M MAHAN et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 14

Objectives. We investigated whether US Army Gulf War veterans who were potentially exposed to nerve agents during the March 1991 weapons demolitions at Khamisiyah, Iraq, are at increased risk of cause-specific mortality. Methods. The cause-specific mortality of 100487 exposed US Army Gulf War veterans was compared with that of 224980 unexposed US Army Gulf War veterans. Exposure was determined with the Department of Defense 2000 plume model. Rela…

  • World War II-veteran male twins who are discordant for alcohol consumption: 24-Year Mortality

Dorit Carmelli, Gary E Swan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1995•Cited by: 6•References: 6

The role of genetic and shared environmental influences in the association of alcohol with mortality was studied by using the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council World War II-veteran male twin registry. An epidemiologic questionnaire administered from 1967 through 1969 permitted identification of twin pairs discordant for alcohol consumption. The subsequent 24 years of mortality follow-up yielded data on time and cause of death…

  • Mortality patterns of New York State Vietnam Veterans

C E Lawrence, Charles Lawrence et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1985

Mortality odds ratios (MORs) comparing veterans with Vietnam service who died in New York State to veterans of the Vietnam era with no Vietnam service were estimated (N = 1,496). The most elevated MORs and their confidence intervals were non-motor vehicular injuries of transport (MOR = 2.18, (1.19, 3.96)), other accidents and burns (MOR = 1.37, (0.95, 1.98)), and homicide (MOR = 1.59, (0.86, 2.94)

  • The use of comparability ratios to adjust hospital trend data

    S C Gee, William F Page•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1985•References: 1

Hospital trend data may be affected by changes in diagnostic coding schemes. We studied the change from ICDA-8 (I-8) to ICD-9-CM (I-9) in a sample of roughly 13,600 double-coded Veterans Administration hospital diagnoses. Comparability ratios were computed and used to adjust trend data which overlap the time period when the shift from I-8 to I-9 occurred. With this adjustment for change in diagnostic coding scheme, apparent diagnostic trends are …

  • Interpretation of Goodman's Log-Linear Model Effects an Odds Ratio Approach

    Open Access•William F Page•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•1977•Cited by: 12•References: 6

In the analysis of multidimensional contingency tables using Goodman's log-linear models, the sometimes complex nature of the problems encountered may lead to an interpretation of analytic results which is based solely upon statistical significance, and not upon substantive importance. In this paper, the well-known relationships between log-linear model effects and odds ratios ('cross-product ratios') are reexamined using previously analyzed samp…
