A pilot study to reduce ageism in pre-health students
A competent, confident workforce is central to managing health for the growing population of older adults. However, ageist myths and stereotypes are still prevalent among students in higher education. The purpose of this pilot study was to encourage a reduction in ageist attitudes among undergraduate pre-health students, with the hope of encouraging them toward careers in aging. The intervention included in-class education that covered who older …

Confronting the paradigm of discipline specific expert knowledge
The World Health Organisation (WHO) global strategy on-people centred and integrated health services calls for a radical shift in the way health services are funded, managed and delivered. The juxtaposition of longevity, burden of chronic disease and availability of complex medical interventions is stretching the health system’s ability to deliver, and government’s capacity to financially sustain.Online availability of healthcare information has …
Do current consent and confidentiality requirements impede or enhance research with children with learning disabilities
Recent changes in UK legislation on data protection and confidentiality have affected key aspects of the research process. They have led to much stricter approaches to research governance, leading in turn to more stringent scrutiny by medical ethics committees and National Health Service (NHS) Trusts. Almost all stages of research are affected, from participant recruitment to storage of data, eating into researcher time and consuming significant …
Schools for the 21st century
In 2002, the Scottish Executive Education Department launched a national debate on schools for the 21st century. The debate elicited over 1500 responses and it is estimated that 20,000 people took part. This paper describes the main themes arising from the debate, highlighting the support for comprehensive education and the high level of trust in the quality and professionalism of teachers. The agenda for change was in terms of greater flexibilit…
Using Technology to Overcome the Tyranny of Space
Urban wayfinding technology offers many possibilities by which older people and mobility-impaired users can overcome the barriers encountered on every-day journeys in the built environment. Previous work has highlighted the extent to which personal mobility and independence are significant determinants of the quality of life amongst both elderly and visually impaired groups. The paper outlines the development of the auditory location finder (ALF)…
Total purchasing, community and continuing care
The introduction of total purchasing pilots (TPPs) into the National Health Service (NHS) gave general practitioners (GPs) significant new opportunities to take responsibility for the development of community and continuing care (CCC) services. Based on five case studies of TPPs involved in developing CCC this paper asks three questions: (1) to what extent were the TPP's involvement in CCC informed by an awareness of CCC policy?; (2) were TPPs in…
Development of an inventory of teachers' attitudes towards sex-role stereotyping and knowledge of sex differences
Age and the Measurement of Mental Health
Data from a sample of 1441 community-dwelling respondents were analyzed to determine whether there are age related differences in their responses to instruments used to measure mental health. Few differences were noted. The data support the position that measurement of mental health is a formidable task; responses and scores are affected by multiple factors, not age alone; and these factors interrelate. Varying degrees of correlation were found b…
