‘Honey, we got cheap beer and hipsters; they got beefcakes and martinis’: How gay men choose a bar
Through participant observation in gay bars and interviews, we explore how gay men choose which bar to visit and how bar environments perpetuate stratification by proactively attracting some types of patrons and dissuading others. Informants reported two major factors that affect their decisions: (1) factors tied to perceptions of place and (2) the patrons. First, we detail how bars are places that sort patrons through discriminatory tactics and …
Health Care Stereotype Threat and Sexual and Gender Minority Well-Being
Sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) have experienced progressive change over the last 50 years. However, this group still reports worse health and health care experiences. An innovative survey instrument that applies stereotype threat to the health care setting, health care stereotype threat (HCST), offers a new avenue to examine these disparities. We harmonized two national probability data sets of SGMs-Generations and TransPop-capturing 503 gay…
Religious Transitions, Sexual Minority Status, and Depressive Symptoms from Adolescence to Early Adulthood
Given that sexual minorities have been historically stigmatized within institutions of religion, they may be less likely to exhibit any health benefits from religious participation. In this article, we use data from Waves I and IV of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health to test whether the effects of religious affiliation (becoming affiliated with a religious group) and disaffiliation (no longer affiliating with a religio…
Research Note: Demographic Change on the United States Coast, 2020–2100
Prospective demographic information of the United States is limited to national-level analyses and subnational analyses of the total population. With nearly 40% of the U.S. population being residents of coastal areas, understanding the anticipated demographic changes in coastal counties is important for long-range planning purposes. In this research note, we use long-range, county-level population projections based on a simplified cohort-componen…
Assessing Trustworthiness in Research: A Pilot Study on CV Verification
When scholars express concern about trust in science, they often focus on whether the public trusts research findings. This study explores a different dimension of trust and examines whether and how frequently researchers misrepresent their research accomplishments when applying for a faculty position. We collected all of the vitae submitted for faculty positions at a large research university for 1 year and reviewed a 10% sample for accuracy. Of…
A Concurrent Exposure to Arsenic and Fluoride from Drinking Water in Chihuahua, Mexico
Inorganic arsenic (iAs) and fluoride (F-) are naturally occurring drinking water contaminants. However, co-exposure to these contaminants and its effects on human health are understudied. The goal of this study was examined exposures to iAs and F- in Chihuahua, Mexico, where exposure to iAs in drinking water has been associated with adverse health effects. All 1119 eligible Chihuahua residents (>18 years) provided a sample of drinking water and s…
