  • The Dioskouroi, Eros, Hades/Pluto, Hera, Kronos, Nemesis and Tyche in the Decapolis

    Asher Ovadiah•ARTICLE•Liber Annuus•2022

The present study engages with seven deities whose veneration and cults appear to have been practiced, even if in a limited way and not widespread, in the cities of the Decapolis during the Roman period: the Dioskouroi, Eros, Hades/ Pluto, Hera, Kronos, Nemesis and Tyche. The various artistic media and findings (architecure, sculpture, epigraphy, numismatics, gems and a mosaic floor) suggest that the veneration and cults of these deities existed …

  • Asklepios, Helios, Hygieia and Sarapis in the Decapolis

    Asher Ovadiah, Sonia Mucznik•ARTICLE•Liber Annuus•2021

The present study engages with four deities, whose veneration and worship were prevalent in the Decapolis in the Roman period: Asklepios, Helios, Hygieia and Sarapis. The discussion is based on the architectural, sculptural, epigraphic and numismatic evidence, as well as on small finds (gems). Evidence for the veneration and cult of Asklepios has not been found so far in half of the cities of the Decapolis. The evidence available to date, seems t…

  • Ares, Athena, Herakles and Nike in the Decapolis

    Asher Ovadiah, Sonia Mucznik•ARTICLE•Liber Annuus•2020

The present study engages with four deities, whose veneration and worship were prevalent in the Decapolis in the Roman period: Ares, Athena, Herakles and Nike. The discussion is based on the architectural, sculptural, epigraphic and numismatic evidence, as well as on small finds (gems). Curiously, only the architectural remains of a single temple, dedicated to Herakles, is preserved in Philadelphia (present-day Amman, Jordan); while for the other…

  • A Fragmentary Wall Painting in Herod’s Theatre at Herodion

    Asher Ovadiah•ARTICLE•Liber Annuus•2013•References: 2

The fragmentary wall painting in question, found loose in the debris in the theatre’s royal room at Herodion, depicts two male figures. It was painted between 15 and 10 BCE, at the time of the theatre’s construction. The excavators believe that it belongs to one of the pinakes (“windows”) of the wall paintings, found in the royal room. Its high artistic quality indicates that the artist must in all probability have been trained in one of the main…

  • Symbolism in Jewish and Christian Works of Art in Late Antiquity

  • The Zeus from Gaza re-examined

  • The Meroth Mosaic Reconsidered

Sonia Mucznik, Asher Ovadiah et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Studies•1996

  • Observations on the Origin of the Architectural Plan of Ancient Synagogues

Asher Ovadiah, Talila Michaeli•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Studies•1987
