The heavy weight of Covid leadership: An analysis of one international school’s leadership during the pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented chaos all over the world, and schools and their leaders have not escaped its impacts. This article analyses the leadership actions of the team from one international school in reopening after mandated lockdown; it seeks to contribute to the discourse on school leadership during these unprecedented times and to share leadership lessons with those bearing the weight of responsibility of leadership dur…
The role of British Schools Overseas in promoting and upholding British values: Using transmission context in policy analysis
With their central position in society as facilitators of information, schools and teachers play a key role in the articulation and embedding of government-driven policy targeted at school-age children; under the British government, this key role extends beyond the borders, to British Schools Overseas. In the last decade, this has been especially prevalent in the dissemination of anti-terrorism rhetoric and policy, created to prevent the radicali…

Philosemitism, Antisemitism and ‘The Jews’: Perspectives from the Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century
The Cleopatras and the Jews
This paper explores a variety of evidence for relations between Cleopatra VII, the last Ptolemaic ruler of Egypt, and her Jewish subjects. In the first part of the paper, the focus is on the profoundly negative portrait of the queen in the works of Josephus, with particular attention to Cleopatra's alleged antipathy to Alexandrian Jews in Josephus's Against Apion . Analysis of Josephus's evidence confirms, I argue, that his case against the queen…
The Words of Moses: Studies in the Reception of Deuteronomy in the Second Temple Period
Recent studies highlight the character of Deuteronomy's laws of public officials (Deut. 16.18-18.22) as the first draft for a constitutional government of the future. Sarah Pearce explores what these laws meant for Jewish interpreters and their communities in the Second Temple period. Her focus is on the reception and transformation of Deuteronomy's laws on the organisation of justice (Deut. 16.18-17.13): the appointment of local judiciaries; the…
Dealing with racist incidents: What do beginning teachers learn from schools
This article focuses on how schools respond to racist incidents, and what new teachers learn from their involvement in those processes. It analyses four incidents involving the pupils of four beginning teachers. The article suggests that in each case, schools either partly or wholly avoided addressing the incident, and that this avoidance can be understood in terms of the colour and power evasive discourse, which is the dominant discourse on race…

The land of the body: Studies in Philo's representation of Egypt
This book presents the first extended study of the representation of Egypt in the writings of Philo of Alexandria. Philo is a crucial witness, not only to the experiences of the Jews of Alexandria, but to the world of early Roman Egypt in general. As historians of Roman Alexandria and Egypt are well aware, we have access to very few voices from inside the country in this era; Philo is the best we have. As a commentator on Jewish Scripture, Philo …

Contextualising Greek Chronicles
A central part of Gillis Gerleman’s 1946 study of Greek Chronicles2 addressed the controversial question of its dating, (a question in part prompted by the evidence in 1 and 2 Esdras for material with substantial parallels in Greek Chronicles).3 In particular, Gerleman argued against those who, with Grotius, credited the translation of Greek Chronicles to Theodotion, placed in the second century of our era. On this point, Gerleman’s negative conc…

Josephus as Interpreter of Biblical Law: The Representation of the High Court of Deut. 17:8–12 According to Jewish Antiquities 4.218
L'identificat…
