  • An Historical Overview of Jewish Theological Responses to Evolution

    Open Access•Daniel R Langton, Daniel Langton•ARTICLE•Theology and Science•2023

While a systematic comparison of the similarities and differences between Jewish and Muslim approaches to evolution is beyond the scope of this study, it is possible to note some of the most striking observations. Among the key differences highlighted by an historical perspective on Jewish approaches in the late-nineteenth to present day are the phenomenon of panentheistic tendences among Jewish commentators and the practice of defining the posit…

  • Naphtali Levy's Divine World: Jewish Tradition, Panentheism and Darwinism

    Open Access•Daniel R Langton•ARTICLE•Theology and Science•2023

A distinctive feature of many Jewish approaches to evolutionary theory has been a panentheistic understanding of the cosmos. Among the earliest Hebrew translations of Darwin are those found in Toldot Adam or The Origin of Man (1874) by the Polish Jewish Naphtali Levy (1840–1894). Often regarded as a traditionalist who sought to harmonize science and Torah, Levy was in fact much more radical and was prepared to prioritise evolutionary science over…

  • Elijah Benamozegh and Evolutionary Theory: A Nineteenth-Century Italian Kabbalist’s Panentheistic Response to Darwin

    Daniel R Langton•ARTICLE•European Journal of Jewish Studies•2016

The Italian rabbi and philosopher Elijah Benamozegh (1823–1900) engaged widely with non-Jewish European culture, especially with regard to theology, philosophy and science. With respect to evolutionary theory, his views went through three stages. These stages correspond to his engagement with ideas of transmutation in three key works, namely, the Hebrew biblical commentary ʾEm la-miqra ʾ (1862–1865), the Italian theological treatise Teologia dogm…

  • God, the Past and Auschwitz: Jewish Holocaust Theologians’ Engagement with History

    Daniel R Langton•ARTICLE•Holocaust Studies•2011•References: 1

The Holocaust has provoked a wide variety of Jewish religious responses, some of which include the claim that, ultimately, historical analysis is incapable of explaining the Nazi genocide. Other Jewish religious thinkers have argued that they can trace God’s providential action and revelation in history, often drawing heavily upon historical resources including survivor testimonies, court transcripts and other accounts of atrocities. Several have…

  • Jewish Creative Approaches to the Apostle Paul: Ludwig Meidner and Franz Werfel

    Daniel R Langton•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Jewish Studies•2008

In contrast to Jewish theological and scholarly studies of Paul, artistic or literary approaches are relatively unknown. This is partly due to the alleged marginality of the Jewish contributors concerned. However, those with complex Jewish identities potentially offer a useful corrective to the impression made by mainstream Jewish religious authorities and popular opinion. The sentiments expressed in Ludwig Meidner’s painting Paul’s Sermon (1919 …

  • Jewish Literary Treatments of the Apostle Paul: The Novels of Shalom Asch and Samuel Sandmel

    Daniel R Langton•ARTICLE•Modern Judaism - A Journal of…•2007

Jewish attitudes towards the Apostle to the Gentiles have been the subject of a number of studies in recent years. These have tended to focus on New Testament or Pauline studies, on theologians and religious leaders. Those conducting the surveys have been interested primarily in interfaith dialogue, but little or no interest has been paid to Jewish artistic or literary endeavors despite the fact that they have also engaged heavily with relevant t…
