  • Perceived rationality, morality, and power of social choice as a function of interdependence structure and social value orientation

    Open Access•Jeffrey A Joireman, D Michael Kuhlman et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2003•Cited by: 5•References: 29

The present study examines how individuals with different social value orientations (i.e. prosocial, individualistic, and competitive) construe the rationality, morality, and power of choices in four distinct interdependence structures which systematically differ in the motives that could underlie the most prosocial or least aggressive choice: (a) altruism only, (b) altruism and cooperation, (c) altruism, cooperation, and individualism, and (d) a…

  • Personality and Risk‐Taking: Common Bisocial Factors

    Open Access•Marvin Zuckerman, D Michael Kuhlman•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2000

The first part of this article describes a study of the relationships between personality and risk‐taking in six areas: smoking, drinking, drugs, sex, driving, and gambling. The participants, 260 college students, were given self‐report measures of risky behaviors in each of the six areas and the Zuckerman‐ Kuhlman five‐factor personality questionnaire. Generalized risk‐taking (across all six areas) was related to scales for impulsive sensation s…

  • Shyness in Self-Disclosure Mediated by Social Skill

Open Access•Rumi Matsushima, Kunio Shiomi et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2000

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Shyness and Social Skills on Self-disclosure. Three scales, the Trait Shyness Scale, the Scale of Social Skill, and the Self-disclosure Questionnaire were administered to 443 university students. Scores on Shyness were highly negatively correlated with those on Social Skills and moderately negatively correlated with Self-disclosure. Furthermore, Self-disclosure scores correlated positively wi…

  • An interdependence analysis of commuting decisions

    Open Access•Jeffrey A Joireman, Paul A M Van Lange et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1997•References: 38

The current research advances an interdependence analysis of commuting decisions (i.e. commuting by car versus public transportation), delineating the determinants of an individual's outcomes in terms of own decisions, other commuters' decisions, and the combination or interaction of own and others' decisions (Kelley & Thibaut, 1978). Consistent with hypotheses, findings revealed that a concern with comfort led to a higher overall personal prefer…

  • Personality Correlates of Allocentric Tendencies in Individualist and Collectivist Cultures

    Open Access•Susumu Yamaguchi, D Michael Kuhlman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1995•Cited by: 29•References: 16

The present study examines personality correlates of personal collectivism (allocentrism) both in an individualist culture (the United States) and in collectivist cultures (Korea and Japan). It was expected those with higher allocentric tendencies would be more concerned with rewards and punishments from in-group members and thus have a lower need for being unique as compared to those with lower allocentric tendencies. Undergraduates in the three…

  • Social value orientations and impressions of partner's honesty and intelligence: A test of the might versus morality effect

    Paul A M Van Lange, D Michael Kuhlman•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1994•Cited by: 65

This research evaluates the might vs. morality effect (Liebrand, Jansen, Rijken, & Suhre, 1986) by examining whether the manipulation of the perception of partner's honesty and intelligence interacts with the observer's own social value orientation to influence the latter's expectations regarding partner cooperation and own cooperation in a social dilemma. Results reveal that greater cooperation was expected from an honest partner than from a dis…

  • A comparison of three structural models for personality: The Big Three, the Big Five, and the Alternative Five

Marvin Zuckerman, D Michael Kuhlman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1993•Cited by: 44

The major factors from 3 models of personality are compared: Eysenck's Three Factor model, Costa and McCrae's version of the Big Five, and Zuckerman and Kuhlman's Alternative Five. The 1st study describes the development of a questionnaire measure for the Alternative Five and the reliability assessments of the scales. The 2nd study used factor analysis to compare the factors among the scales from the 3 models. Extraversion and Neuroticism were qu…

  • Individual differences in game motivation as moderators of preprogrammed strategy effects in prisoner's dilemma

    D Michael Kuhlman, Alfred F Marshello•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1975•Cited by: 75

The impact of three programmed strategies (tit-for-tat, 100% cooperation, and 100% defection) on cooperation level in the Prisoner's Dilemma game is examined as a function of the subject's motivational orientation (cooperative, competitive, or individualistic). Motivational orientation was assessed on the basis of each subject's choices across four classes of decomposed games. Following this assessment, subject's played 30 trials of Prisoner's di…

  • More Help for Those Who Try Harder

    Open Access•Robert Eisenberger, Carl G Carlson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1970

To test the generalization that the amount of altruistic helping behavior is an increasing function of the effort which the donor believes is being expended by the recipient in pursuit of a goal, college students were given the opportunity anonymously to help a peer (actually a confederate of E) whom they perceived to be unsuccessfully attempting to perform an act. As predicted, S's rate of helping responses increased, the greater the recipient's…
