Personality Theories
This text provides a comprehensive introduction to the key personality theorists by combining biographical information on each theorist with his or her contributions to the field, including her or his ranking among the world’s most respected psychologists. In addition, Allen provides a tabular format–that is, a running comparison between the major theorists, allowing students to analyze new theories against theories learned in previous chapters. …

Misunderstanding the Adjective Generation Technique (AGT)
The relationship between AGT self‐description and significant life events
BACKGROUND: Non-use of and dissatisfaction with ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) occurs frequently. The objective of this study is to gain insight in the conversation during the intake and examination phase, from the clients’ perspective, at two levels: 1) the attention for the activities and the context in which these activities take place, and 2) the quality of the conversation. METHODOLOGY: Semi-structured interviews were performed with 12 AFO users…
Race and Physical Attractiveness as Criteria for White Subjects' Dating Choices
Research involving race as a criterion for various social choices indicates that race may rival attractiveness for the determination of dating choices. This possibility was explored in two experiments involving “desirability for a date” ratings of black and white stimulus persons who varied in attractiveness. Experiment 1 results indicated that white male and female subjects gave appreciable weight to race and attractiveness, but females gave rac…

Need for Approval as Related to the Effects of Persuasive Communications on Actual, Reported and Intended Behavior Change—A Viable Predictor
Need-for-approval scores were examined for possible relationships with various persuasive appeals, including one in which the social-approval content was predicted to have maximal effect on Ss high in need for approval. The study was conducted in the context of a large project in a natural setting ostensibly for the purpose of improving dental hygiene. Dependent measures included behavioral as well as reported responses in all experimental condit…
The Adjective Generation Technique
A recently developed Adjective Generation Technique for evaluating favorability of self-description was introduced as an alternative to standardized adjective check lists. Preliminary estimates of test-retest reliability ( r = .74) and construct validity ( r = .53) for the technique were reported. The comparative utility of the procedure over that of the Gough Adjective Check List was discussed
Implications of Social Reaction Research for Racism
It was asserted that evidence for the existence of the phenomenon “racism” would be forthcoming if anti-black sentiment is shown to be manifested in social reality in some consistent manner. The “Rokeach-Triandis Controversy” was reviewed in order to demonstrate that past research yields a suggestion of a possible manifestation of racism. An experimental approach at direct confirmation of the suggested manifestation was defined. The relationship …
Demonstrations in Attitude Change and Persuasive Communication
17 statements representing 17 positions favored (positive) by 119 students at a midwestern university were located. To demonstrate that Ss with extreme positions are resistant to change, communications opposing the two most positive statements were presented to 40 university students. To demonstrate that moderately held positions are likely to change in the same direction, communications supporting the two least positive statements were presented…
Fear arousal, persuasion, and actual versus implied behavioral change
In three junior high schools, students were exposed to high fear arousal, moderate fear arousal, positive affect arousal, elaborated recommendations only, and brief recommendations only directed at improving toothbrushing behavior. Criterion measures of information, anxiety, intention to behave, self-report of behavior, and a new chemical indicator of actual toothbrushing behavior were administered precommunication, immediately postcommunication,…
New Measure of Effects of Persuasive Communications
The purpose of the present investigation was to develop a behavioral measure of attitude change and examine its utility for large-scale field research efforts. Three groups were formed from 68 junior and senior high school students and each was presented with a different form (positive, fear, neutral) of a communication within the context of a public school system's ongoing dental hygiene program. Cleanliness of their teeth was measured by a chem…
Video Tape Recording in Social Psychological Research
The present paper examines the capability of the video tape recorder as a behavior-sampling instrument within the context of an investigation ostensibly designed to determine possibly positive or aversive effects of the absence or presence of mothers on children's behavior in a dental treatment situation. The behavior of 22 children was video tape-recorded as a dentist cleaned their teeth. The mothers of all children were present for one half and…
