  • Identity Centrality and Psychosocial Functioning

    Open Access•Alan Meca, Rachel A Ritchie et al.•ARTICLE•Emerging Adulthood•2015

There has been increased recognition that identity operates within several "components" and that not every component is likely to be equally central to one's sense of self. The aim of the current study was to determine the extent to which identity components (i.e., personal, relational, collective, and public) are differentially central to emerging adults' identity. We used a two-step cluster analytic procedure to identify distinct clusters and d…

  • Identity Processing and Self-Consciousness in Middle and Later Adulthood

    Joel R Sneed, Susan K Whitbourne•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2003•Cited by: 9•References: 3

Identity process theory proposes that adjustment to aging can be conceptualized as involving the three processes of identity assimilation (maintaining self-consistency), identity accommodation (making changes in the self), and identity balance (maintaining a sense of self but changing when necessary). Measures of the identity processes and self-consciousness were administered to a community sample of 173 adults (108 women and 65 men) ranging in a…

  • Ageism in undergraduate psychology texts

    Susan K Whitbourne, Irene M Hulicka•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•1990

A sample of 139 texts written over the past 40 years was analyzed for evidence of ageism (i.e., lack of attention to the psychology of later life and stereotyping of older adults). More recent texts cover the topic more comprehensively than in the past, but this coverage is limited in depth. Although textbook authors appear to be trying to communicate a positive message about aging and older persons, their efforts are compromised by ambivalence i…

This study investigated outcomes of geriatric rehabilitation and predictors of success among 81 consecutive admissions to a 40-bed rehabilitation unit in a long-term care facility. Predictors measured at admission included sociodemographic variables, functional status (both current and prior to illness), social contact, and self-motivation. In all, 62 patients (77%) successfully completed the rehabilitation program; 76% of the successes were disc…

  • Openness to experience, identity flexibility, and life change in adults

    Susan K Whitbourne•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1986•Cited by: 8

The personality trait of openness to experience was used to predict identity flexibility, the tendency of adults to evaluate alternative identity commitments in the area of family and work. Openness to experience was also used as an independent variable to predict the occurrence of actual life change 12 months after identity flexibility was ascertained. A sample of 57 adults (34 women and 23 men) ranging in age from 24 to 61 (M = 41 years) was te…
