  • Methods and measures in social and personality psychology

Andrew F Simon, David A Wilder et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Social Psychology•2024

Reviews of articles from social and personality psychology journals have been largely limited to subsets of publications from particular years and to a focus on descriptive qualities of articles. This paper compares the methods and measures employed in all empirical articles published in 1982 to those that appeared in 2016 from Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. There has been an increase in self-report data, a decline in behavioral ob…

  • Social Identity, Intergroup Conflict, and Conflict Reduction

Kevin Avruch, Richard D Ashmore et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•2002

How are group-based identities related to intergroup conflict? When and how do ethnic, religious, and national identities lead to oppression, violence, rebellion, war, mass-murder, and genocide? How do intergroup conflicts change people's identities? How might social identity be harnessed in the service of reducing conflict between groups? The chapters in this book present a sophisticated and detailed interdisciplinary analysis of the most topica…

  • Enhancing the impact of counterstereotypic information

David A Wilder, Andrew F Simon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1996•Citada por: 14

Counterstereotypic behavior by a single out-group member often fails to change out-group stereotypes because it can be dismissed as an exception to the rule. The impact ofthe exception can be strengthened by making the exception appear to be a typical out-group member and by encouraging a dispositional attribution for the exception's counterstereotypic behavior. These hypotheses were supported in 3 experiments using both artificial and real socia…

  • Role of competition-induced anxiety in limiting the beneficial impact of positive behavior by an out-group member

    David A Wilder, Peter N Shapiro•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1989•Citada por: 7

Several variables influence whether contact with a favorable out-group member has a beneficial impact on intergroup relations. In two experiments we examined the effect of competition-induced anxiety on reaction to the behavior of a favorable out-group member. In Experiment 1 a competitive context produced (a) anxiety, relative to a cooperative context, and (b) assimilation of a favorable out-group member to the unfavorable majority. Experiment 2…

  • Reevaluating the Place of Evaluation in Planning for Alternatives to Institutional Care for the Elderly

    Open Access•Barry J Gurland, Barry Gurland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1981•Referencias: 16

This paper reviews an array of studies evaluating alternative settings and programs for long term care of the elderly. Some major methodological weaknesses of those evaluation studies are reviewed. Substantial ambiguities in the results of those studies are also examined. For both of these reasons, and others, research results have had little impact on policy for long term care of the elderly. The paper argues for an emphasis, in the future, on r…

    Open Access•Vernon L Allen, David A Wilder•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1979•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 11

An experiment was conducted to test the effectiveness of an absentee social supporter as a way of reducing conformity. Eighty female subjects responded in five-person groups. On the pretext of a mechanical failure in the apparatus, four group members gave answers on 11 trials while the subject observed but did not answer. The same series of 11 trials was then repeated (the apparatus having allegedly been repaired), with the subject answering in o…

  • Perceived persuasiveness as a function of response style

    Open Access•Vernon L Allen, David A Wilder•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1978•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

This experiment studied the effect of an individual's response style on different issues over a long period of time. A hypothetical situation depicted the repeated responses given by one person on a target issue and on four other issues for one year. The 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design varied consistency of the stimulus person's position on the target issue during the year (consistent or variable); his consistency on other issues during the year (cons…

    D W Rajecki, Robert F Kidd et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1975•Citada por: 4

Two experiments investigated the generality of socially enhanced consummatory behavior in chickens and the conditions that influence such enhancement. The first experiment placed two consummatory responses (pecking and drinking) in competition. The design of the experiment contrasted three common interpretations of social facilitation of feeding in chickens: (a) the imitation of specific responses of another bird, (b) the arousing effect of anoth…
