Teaching Psychology of Women: A Survey of Instructors
A 38-item questionnaire was sent to 440 instructors of psychology of women courses; 230 surveys were returned. This article examines characteristics of people who teach courses in psychology of women, characteristics of their institutions, characteristics of the course itself, and the instructors' reactions to the course. Among the findings are: (a) instructors in this course vary greatly in the number of years they have taught the course and in …
Evaluative Meaning as a Determinant of Spew Positions
A series of three experiments with male and female undergraduates demonstrated a relationship between evaluative meaning and spew position. In Experiment 1, 57 Ss listed 20 pairs of adjectives. They showed a significant tendency to list the pleasant member of each pair first; word frequency, on the other hand, was unrelated to spew position. In Experiment 2, 41 Ss constructed separate lists of items in four categories. Evaluative rating and word …
The Relationship between English Word Length and Short-Term Memory
Three experiments examined the relationship between English word length and short-term memory. Two hypotheses were tested: (a) Word length, whether measured by number of letters or number of syllables, will not influence recall; (b) Two-syllable words containing a high-frequency prefix or suffix and one-syllable words of equivalent frequency will be recalled equally well. Seventy-two male and female college students were tested, using the Peterso…
Effect of Meaningfulness and Instructions on Frequency Estimation
The purpose of the present experiment was to determine whether stimulus meaningfulness, instructions regarding the probable range of frequenq estimates, and the interaction of these two factors would influence estimation of frequency. Eight 2-syllable nonsense words and English words from Noble's lists (1952) were to represent 4 levels of meaningfulness: .99-1.24, 1.96-2.26, 4.68-5.61, 7.70--9.61. All stimuli appeared on a stimulus sheet 0, 1, 2,…
Frequency-Affect Relationship in a Simultaneous Spatial Presentation
72 college students saw a spatial display in which nonsense-word stimuli occurred 25, 10, 5, 2, 1 and 0 times. Occurrences of a given stimulus were either massed or distributed throughout the display. After a 4-min. viewing period, they rated all stimuli on a 7-point good-bad scale. Affect was a linear function of frequency, corroborating Zajonc's results with temporal presentation of stimuli that high-frequency items are preferred to low-frequen…
