Examining English- and Spanish-Speaking Therapist Behaviors in Parent–Child Interaction Therapy
Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) is a best-practice treatment for behavior problems in young children. In PCIT, therapists coach parents during in-vivo interactions to strengthen the parent-child relationship and teach parents effective ways of managing difficult child behaviors. Past research has found that different therapist coaching styles may be associated with faster skill acquisition and improved parent engagement. However, most res…
Acculturation Gap, Intergenerational Conflict, Parenting Style, and Youth Distress in Immigrant Chinese American Families
This study examined mother–child acculturation gaps in relationship to youth distress and the possible mediating role of parent–child conflict and parenting style in a sample of 81 Chinese American families. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses provided partial support for a relationship between acculturation gaps and youth distress. No mediators of this relationship were found; however, post-hoc analyses indicated that intergenerational con…
Parental Cultural Affiliation and Youth Mental Health Service Use
Racial and Ethnic Differences in Utilization of Mental Health Services Among High-Risk Youths
OBJECTIVE: Racial and ethnic disparities in mental health service use have been identified as a major public health problem. However, the extent to which these disparities may be accounted for by other confounding sociodemographic or clinical predictors of service use (e.g., family income, functional impairment, caregiver strain) is relatively unexplored, especially for youth services. The goal of this study was to test for racial/ethnic disparit…
The acculturation gap-distress hypothesis among high-risk Mexican American families.
The authors tested the acculturation gap-distress hypothesis by examining whether parent-adolescent acculturation gaps were associated with greater conflict and youth conduct problems among 260 high-risk Mexican American families. The authors operationalized acculturation gaps in 2 ways: parent-youth mismatches in acculturation style, and parent-youth discrepancies in acculturation toward both mainstream and heritage cultures. Acculturation gaps …
The Relation between Violence Exposure and Conduct Problems among Adolescents
This study tested the hypothesis that exposure to community violence, intimate partner violence, and child maltreatment independently contribute to the prediction of conduct problems over a 2-year period. Participants were a subsample of youth ages 12 to 17 years (N = 423) from the Patterns of Care study, which drew a stratified random sample of high-risk youth receiving services from public service sectors. Exposure to community violence signifi…
Ethnie Variation in the Prevalence of Substance Use Disorders in Youth Sectors of Care
Objective: Examine ethnic variation in the prevalence of substance use disorders (SUDs) among adolescents who received services in one or more public sectors of care including: Alcohol and Drug, Juvenile Justice, Mental Health, Public School-based services for youths with serious emotional disturbance, and Child Welfare, in relation to age, gender, and service sector affiliation. Methods: Participants included 936 adolescents 13-18 years of age r…
Prevalence of Psychiatric Disorders in Youths Across Five Sectors of Care
First Comes Work, Then Comes Marriage
In this study we gathered quantitative and qualitative information on the thoughts and feelings of 72 low income, African American sixth‐graders about their future careers, romantic relationships, and family relationships. Interviews were scored along several dimensions of future orientation: detail, optimism, pessimism, realism, and control beliefs. Children also rated the probability that various future life events would occur. Repeated Measure…
Sex Differences in the Long Term Effects of Divorce on Children
This study investigates the possibility that divorce has long term effects on children, and that these effects manifest themselves in increased heterosexual relationship difficulties and depression in young adulthood. Also, sex differences in heterosexual relationship difficulties and depression of divorced subjects were examined. Male {n = 33) and female (n = 38) young adult subjects from divorced and intact families were administered the Beck D…
Environmental and personal determinants of support perceptions
The extent to which perceived social support reflects characteristics of the environment, the personality of the perceiver, and their interaction is unknown. This article shows how the methods of generalizability theory can be used to address these questions. When participants rate the same targets on the targets' supportiveness, generalizability theory provides methods for determining the extent to which support judgments are determined by effec…
