Legal Socialization
Theories of legal socialization can be classified as either content or process models. Although process models are important, the present paper suggests they suffer from two major misconceptions: (1) a lack of interest in the behavioral consequences of legal judgments, and (2) the assumption that judgments are the cause of actions. An alternative model for understanding the processes underlying legal socialization is presented. The model suggests…
Personality trait development from age 12 to age 18
Three studies were conducted to assess mean level changes in personality traits during adolescence. Versions of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (P. T. Costa, Jr., & R. R. McCrae, 1992a) were used to assess the 5 major personality factors. A 4-year longitudinal study of intellectually gifted students (N = 230) was supplemented by cross-sectional studies of nonselected American (N = 1,959) and Flemish (N = 789) adolescents. Personality factor…
Cognitive-psychological profiles of gifted adolescents from Ireland and the U.S
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was administered to 1,247 gifted adolescents from the United States and a comparable sample of 309 gifted Irish adolescents, all of whom were attending summer programs for the academically talented. Strikingly similar patterns of cognitive and psychological styles were found for the gifted students in both Ireland and the U.S. These patterns are quite different than those found in normative samples of U.S. s…

Psychometric Properties and Underlying Assumptions of Two Measures of Masculinity/Femininity
The psychometric properties and assumptions underlying the terms masculinity and femininity were examined using two psychometrically and conceptually different measures of masculinity/femininity, the Femininity Scale from the California Psychological Inventory and the Bern Sex-role Inventory. Participants were 221 male and 221 female undergraduate and graduate college students. The results of principal components and correlational analyses indica…
A role theoretical interpretation of personality scale item responses
This paper proposes that test-taking behavior can be regarded as a kind of self-presentation formally identical to that which goes on in most social interaction. It follows from this analysis that the success of such self-presentations should be affected by the actor's role-taking ability or empathy. Evidence is presented that supports this conjecture; the paper then suggests that role-taking ability may limit in a systematic manner validity coef…
Effects of imprinting and isolation on aggressive responses in chicks
The importance of isolation and imprinting as separate factors influencing early aggressive responses in chicks (Gallus gallus) was studied in two separate experiments. In addition the effect of the presence or absence of the imprinting stimulus in the test situation was examined in Experiment 1. Neither imprinting per se, nor the presence of the imprinting stimulus significantly affected aggressiveness. Rearing conditions (isolation vs social re…
