Dogmatism and the distinctiveness of opposite vs. different cognitive systems: Release from proactive inhibition for shifts within- and between-dimensions of meaning
Confirmatory bias in the evaluation of personality descriptions: Positive test strategies and output interference
The operation of confirmatory bias in the endorsement of personality descriptions was examined in 4 studies. Unlike M. F. Davies (1997), who provided only inferential evidence for the role of this bias, the present studies provided direct evidence through the experimental manipulation of supporting versus contradictory cognitions. Generating supporting thoughts resulted in greater acceptance whereas generating contradictory thoughts resulted in l…
Dogmatism and belief formation: Output interference in the processing of supporting and contradictory cognitions
The role of reason generation in dogmatic thinking was examined by means of cognitive response analysis. In Experiment 1, dogmatism was associated with greater confidence in judgments as a result of postjudgment generation of more supporting and less contradictory evidence. Experiment 2 produced similar results for confidence judgments with prejudgment reason generation, except that no difference in supporting evidence was found as a function of …
Private Self-Consciousness and the Acceptance of Personality Feedback: Confirmatory Processing in the Evaluation of General vs Specific Self-Information
Belief Persistence after Evidential Discrediting: The Impact of Generated versus Provided Explanations on the Likelihood of Discredited Outcomes
Positive test strategies and confirmatory retrieval processes in the evaluation of personality feedback
Cognitive-response analysis was carried out to investigate people's acceptance of personality feedback. In 3 studies with 223 male and female college students 18-38 years old, participants generated more confirming than disconfirming evidence for personality feedback. Availability of confirmatory evidence was found to be closely related to the rated accuracy of the feedback. Both rated accuracy and amount of confirmatory evidence were greater for…
Self-Consciousness and the Complexity of Private and Public Aspects of Identity
Complexity of private and public aspects of the self was investigated as a function of private and public self-consciousness. Using a sorting task to assess self-complexity, it was found that private self-consciousness was associated with greater complexity of private aspects but not public aspects of the self, whereas public self-consciousness was associated with greater complexity of public aspects but not private aspects of the self. These fin…
Field-Dependence and Hindsight Bias: Output Interference in the Generation of Reasons
Distinctiveness of Self-Images: Self-Processing and Release from Proactive Inhibition
Field dependence and hindsight bias: Cognitive restructuring and the generation of reasons
Paranormal Beliefs in British and Southern USA College Students
Beliefs in a variety of paranormal phenomena were examined in a sample of British college students and were compared with the beliefs obtained in a previous study from a sample of Southern USA college students. The main difference between the British and American students concerned traditional religious belief. Not only were the American students greater believers than the British students in traditional religion, but factor analysis indicated th…
Self-Focusing Effects on Self-Consciousness
Recenr research has suggested an important distinction between private and public aspects of the self ( 1 ) . One distinction is between Private and Public Self-consciousness-the extent to which people are habitually attentive to private and public self-aspects ( 2 ) . Many studies have confirmed the importance of this private-public distinction in affecting self-functioning ( 1 ) . Related to this work on trai! self-consciousness is research on …
