    Open Access•John C Barefoot, Lloyd Strickland et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1982•Cited by: 2•References: 18

A simulation of a supervisor-worker conflict was performed with fourperson groups in either a face-to-face or a television-mediated communication setting. Face-to-face groups were more likely to reach solutions indicative of high intragroup conflict. Although mean values did not differ, there was more variability among face-to-face groups in discussion time and measures of supervisor dominance. These results were interpreted as suggesting that el…

  • Applied Social Psychology in the USSR

    Lloyd Strickland, Lloyd H Strickland•ARTICLE•Soviet Psychology•1981

International, and even intercontinental, comparisons of social psychologies have become enlightening over the last decade (e.g., Israel & Tajfel, 1972; Strickland, Aboud, & Gergen, 1974). Within the last few years, comparisons involving the USSR have moved from possibility to actuality (Krauss, 1976; Strickland, 1979, 1980). Nevertheless, for a variety of reasons, ranging from the paucity of pages devoted to journal and book translations to the …

  • Ego-Threat and the Privacy-Sociality of Leisure Activity Choice

John C Barefoot, Lloyd Strickland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•1981•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This study was an effort to examine the links between egothreatening situations, privacy needs, and preferences for different styles of leisure activity. Using a questionnaire, it was observed that

  • Teleconferencing and Leadership Emergence

    Open Access•Lloyd Strickland, Lloyd H Strickland et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1978•Cited by: 2•References: 32

An attempt was made to assess the role of medium of communication on leadership differentiation in discussion groups. Groups of undergraduates met on five different occasions to solve human relations problems, either in face-to-face discussion situations or over video conferencing networks. In face-to-face conditions development of leadership took almost a classic form, with sociometric measures systematically related to behavioral indexes; in th…

  • Dissonance theory, self‐perception and the bogus pipeline

    Open Access•Paul D Guild, Paul Guild et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1977•References: 28

Studied attitude change following counter‐attitudinal advocacy where there was little incentive for subject compliance in an attempt to compare dissonance and self‐perception theory predictions. The extent of attitude change was determined either by self‐report or by having subjects predict their own true attitudes purportedly monitored by the experimenter using a ‘bogus pipeline’. Forty‐eight male and female subjects, students from an introducto…

  • What the shadow knows

James M Olson, John C Barefoot et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1976•Cited by: 3

Under one of three task conditions, male subjects observed a prescribed behavior sequence performed by a female confederate. Covert-surveillance subjects followed her in public, having been told that she was randomly chosen as a target and was unaware of the surveillance. Overt-surveillance subjects actively followed the target, but knew of her role as confederate. Inactive subjects viewed a videotape of the behavior sequence. It was hypothesized…

  • Coalition Formation in Continuous, Episodic and Terminal Situations

    Open Access•Lloyd Strickland, Lloyd H Strickland et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

An attempt was made to test Caplow's predictions concerning behavior of triad members in three different group contexts. The hypotheses received partial support, but examination of other data led to suggestions for criterion revision applicable to all studies of coalition formation

  • Optional Anonymity and Political Balloting

    Open Access•Lloyd Strickland, Lloyd H Strickland et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1966

Data from a student political poll were analyzed to test the hypothesis that those voters casting a ballot for the unpopular candidate would be more likely to do so anonymously than would those voting for the popular candidate. The data tended to support the hypothesis, but were rendered less definitive by the fact that affiliates of the political party allegedly represented by the unpopular candidate tended to cast anonymous ballots regardless o…

  • An Alternative Form of a Forced-Choice F Scale

    Open Access•Lloyd Strickland, Lloyd H Strickland et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

A forced-choice form of the F scale was constructed and correlations were computed between the resulting scores and those from a “counterbalanced” form and its two components: the scores from embedded original Authoritarianism Scale items and the scores from embedded “reversed” items. Reliabilities of the forced-choice scale were .69 and .66 for two samples. It was observed that the forced-choice × “original” correlations were slightly lower than…

  • Response Time as a Cue in Person Perception

    Open Access•Lloyd Strickland, Lloyd H Strickland et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1964

The information conveyed by the delay preceding response of stimulus persons ( SPs) to problem solutions offered by S was evaluated in terms of S‘s imputations of competence or compliance to the SP. It was observed that induction of a “set” in S in which one of the above traits was relevant resulted in S's preference for an SP whom he inferred to possess the relevant trait from SP‘s response time. It was also observed that the nature of these inf…
