A Comprehensive Analysis of Psychological Determinants of Socio-Demographic Variability in Superstition Endorsement
We explored the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and superstition endorsement, distinguishing between the practice of and belief in superstitions, as well as between positive and negative superstitions. We examined specifically whether analytic thinking style, anxiety, and intolerance of uncertainty account for socio-demographic variability in these dimensions of endorsement and to what extent stress from macro-level threate…
Exemplar-based ingroup projection: The superordinate national category is associated more strongly with ingroup than outgroup political leaders
My country, right or wrong: Does activating system justification motivation eliminate the liberal-conservative gap in patriotism
Interpersonal similarity as a social distance dimension: Implications for perception of others’ actions
Psychological Needs and Values Underlying Left-Right Political Orientation: Cross-National Evidence from Eastern and Western Europe
According to previous research conducted mainly in the United States, psychological needs pertaining to the management of uncertainty and threat predict right-wing conservatism, operationally defined in terms of resistance to change and acceptance of inequality. In this study, we analyze data from 19 countries included in the European Social Survey (ESS) to assess two sets of hypotheses: (1) that traditionalism (an aspect of resistance to change)…
Intergroup Reconciliation: Effects of Adversary's Expressions of Empathy, Responsibility, and Recipients' Trust
The present study explores the effects of expressions of empathy for the ingroup's conflict-related suffering and assumed responsibility for causing it by a representative of the rival outgroup on recipient's willingness for reconciliation. It is suggested that such positive expressions by an adversary will have positive effects on reconciliation only in the presence of a basic level of trust in the outgroup. In two studies, Israeli-Jewish partic…
The paradox of group-based guilt: Modes of national identification, conflict vehemence, and reactions to the in-group's moral violations
The authors examined the relationships between 2 modes of national identification (attachment to the in-group and the in-group's glorification) and reactions to the in-group's moral violations among Israeli students. Data were collected during a period of relative calm in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as well as during a period of great intensification of this conflict. As expected, in Study 1, the 2 modes of identification had contrasting rel…
Intergroup Reconciliation Processes in Israel: Theoretical Analysis and Empirical Findings
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict involves two national movements that lay claim to the same land. Since the end of the first major Arab-Israeli war in 1948, relations between Israelis and Palestinians have been marked by violence and distrust, and for most of their common history neither side has accepted the legitimacy of the other's national existence. This reality changed in 1993 when Israelis and Palestinians signed the Oslo Accords, a set of…
