Level of Burden Among Women Diagnosed with Severe Mental Illness and Substance Abuse
Women diagnosed with severe mental illness and substance abuse may face a variety of associated difficulties that require intervention, including other health-related problems, housing instability or homelessness, and a history of or current physical or sexual abuse. This article expands upon the concept of "level of burden" by specifically examining issues for women with multiple vulnerabilities in a sample of 577 women participating in a reside…
Fax-In Forms as a Technology for Evaluating Community Projects: An Example of HIV Risk Reduction
This article describes a new technology that can be easily adapted to pennit virtually instantaneous tracking and evaluation of community-based projects that are widely dispersed in the field. Current technologies permit special forms to be sent via an ordinary fax machine into a centrally located personal computer equipped with an inexpensive fax modem board. As the faxes are received, hand printed, and "bubble-coded," responses are interpreted …
Women Living with Drug Abuse and HIV Disease: Drug Abuse Treatment Access and Secondary Prevention Issues
In collaboration with the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Health Resources and Services Administration is conducting a multisite, longitudinal study on issues of service needs, service utilization, and access to care for drug abusers with HIV. This article discusses access to drug abuse treatment and HIV secondary prevention for 116 women interviewed during the study's first year in five U.S. cities. Using interview data from 115 service pr…
A Short Depression Index for Women
The CES-D is a well-known index of acute depressive symptoms experienced over a 7-day period that has been used in literally hundreds of studies. This article presents the psychometric derivation of 8- and 4-item screening versions of the CES-D for use in research with community-based samples. These short depressive symptom indices can be used in those instances where a brief assessment is needed for broad screening or research purposes. Using da…
Assessing the Stability of Depression in College Students
Two different approaches are used to assess the one-month stability of depressive affect in college students. First, a high retest correlation is demonstrated for a latent depressive affect construct using self-reports from the previous month on the Beck Depression Inventory, the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale, and Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale. This is true although the corresponding stabilities for individual scales a…
Statistics for Computer-Based Test Interpretations: Bivariate and Multivariate Uniqueness
A test is proposed for determining whether pairs, or sets, of scores in a profile are unusual. The test involves the evaluation of a Wishart distribution. When many tests are made on one profile, the probability level is adjusted with the Bonferroni correction. This test can be regularly evaluated in computer-based test inter-pretation programs. An example drawn from a well-known personality test is given
The Use of the Runs Test for Assessing Response Validity in Computer Scored Inventories
The runs test for random sequences of responding is proposed for application in long inventories with dichotomous items as an index of stereotyped responding. This index is useful for detecting whether the client shifts between response alternatives more or less frequently than would be expected by chance. If the items in the inventory are not counterbalanced, the index can be individually normed for particular applications
Simplified Formula for Bivariate Uniqueness Analysis
Uniqueness analysis tests whether the scores on p profile tests are rare in a multivariate sense. This paper presents a simplified formula for the special case when p = 2. Examples are given
Interval Banded Profile Analysis: A Method for Matching Score Profiles to "Soft" Prototypic Patterns
A recurrent problem in assessment work is to determine the degree of match for a client score profile to some known prototypic group patterns. Frequently, it is more accurate to conceptualize the "known" group pattern as a range of values than as a series of point estimates. Interval banded profile analysis represents a generalization of the method of centours to this problem
A Frequency-Based Test of Valid Responding in Questionnaires
A simple statistical test procedure for assessing questionnaire response validity is proposed. The technique assesses the joint probability that frequently reported behaviors are not reported and infrequently reported behaviors are reported
Desirability of various life change events among adolescents: Effects of exposure, sex, age, and ethnicity
Determinants of sexual and dating behaviors among adolescents
The study of adolescent sexual development has typically focused on the incidence and age of onset of particular behaviors. Recent developments in the analysis of covariance structures permit more powerful simultaneous tests of the determinants of adolescent sexual behavior. These new methods allow the assessment and evaluation of the interrelatedness between unobserved, latent constructs. Data were obtained from 183 males and 193 females ranging…
A fit index for covariance structure models under arbitrary GLS estimation
A general fit index for covariance structure models is obtained for all estimators that can be considered under generalized least squares (GLS) approaches including asymptotically efficient, robust, and resistant methods of estimation. This fit index is expressed as a function of the ratio of two trace functions. Normal theory ordinary least squares (OLS) and maximum likelihood (ML) fit indices previously given by Jöreskog and Sörbom can be deriv…
Mothers' influence on the drug use of their children: Confirmatory tests of direct modeling and mediational theories
On etudie ici l'influence que pourrait avoir la mere en tant que modele sur les conduites des enfants par rapport aux drogues, au tabac et a l'alcool
A comparison of two latent variable causal models for adolescent drug use
The competing simplex (involvement) and common factor models for youthful drug use are statistically compared using causal modeling with latent variables methods in a sample of 1,634 young adolescents. Latent variables of alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drug use were confirmed and causally interconnected in a set of states. The confirmatory factor and the simplex stage models were found to be acceptable representations of the observed data …
The role of peer and adult models for drug taking at different stages in adolescence
The Relationship Of Personality Structure To Patterns Of Adolescent Substance Use
The relationship of personality to patterns of adolescent substance use was examined in an effort to determine the extent to which these domains overlap. During the first year of a longitudinal study of adolescent drug use, self-report data were collected on personality and current use patterns of 13 substances. The data from the domains of drug use and personality were interrelated using canonical correlation analysis. Rotation of canonical vari…
